As Lacuna over yonder's sayin', for us at least you can't wipe every single trace of a memory out. Somethin' surfaces eventually, most times, and even if it don't it can affect behavioral processes.

Actually, I did have constant nightmares about the incident ever since it could hav happened. I just never knew what to make of them, and didn't want to accept that it could have happened to me. I wouldn't have recognized Sal's human form, either. He stayed as a shark all the time, before his betrayal.

He did give me my memories back, too, once he revealed that he was an agent of the Sea of Death. He didn't need to blackmail Samekichi anymore, so he returned them to me in the hopes that the memories would, well, break my mind, so I could be his.
