You're assuming that my standard of 'ordinary' doesn't, by necessity, consist entirely of 'family' groupings built of of disparate individuals. For a given standard of family. Honestly, I don't think the concept, in terms of relational bonding, carries over very well.

My life ceased to be vaguely mystical long ago, and now it's just an outright mixture of science and sorcery.

I am sorry about Bill. He's my stalker ex. He can't reach me anywhere but here, so he comes here to annoy me because it's something, even if he can't actually hurt me here either.

He'd probably go away if my family ignored him entirely, but this place actually exists because of him.
