Organics have other ways of heat regulation! They ventilate in order to get gasses from the atmosphere for various biological functions. However, gasses are also dissolved in the water marine organics live in. This leads to two general directions of evolution: some marine organics have evolved to be very very efficient at snatching the dissolved gasses from water, while others have evolved to need to uptake gasses less frequently, rising to the surface to take a breath when they need to refresh their supply. Both types utilize their gasses much more efficiently than non-marine organics.

Some organics filter gases from water; their "vents" are built to handle this exchange. I don't think they have thermoregulation issues, but then my experience is largely confined to a temperate climate.

that sounds neat. what's evolved mean? Like a ew model or....?

...listen to the actual bioscholar, my knowledge is cribbed mainly from dissections and secondhand information.

I am not completely organic anymore, and my need for atmospheric gases is much lower than most, so as long as I can respirate for a period of about half an hour once per approximate day cycle. It comes in handy.

Evolved means that successful adaptations are more likely to survive and reproduce; thus, over time, the population tends towards those successful adaptations. It tends to be why organic lifeforms have comparatively short lives.

Aw naw man, explain things too! What do the squishies do with the gas stuff?

Species change over time. Mechanoid species, too, but we do it more slowly! Evolution is the process by which this naturally happens in organics, via random mutations of their... production coding, I guess you could call it. Sometimes these random mutations give them an advantage. Sometimes they give a disadvantage. Often they do nothing or cause a neutral shift. But, reproduction determines if these mutations stay in the population or not. Over enough time and with enough mutations either causing better adaption to the environment or causing neutral changes, species can and do radically change.

No! This varies a lot depending on the social model of the organic, and sapient organics tend to be herd or pack animals. Very social! Something about having to process multiple social interactions to survive tends to lead to what we consider sapience. Social entities are less likely to abandon in-group members for perceived defects, although this is not a hard and fast rule.

Something chemical, I'd assume. Again, most of my subjects are dead, I've no way of testing anything that happens on a molecular level and, to be frank, no real inclination to do so when my main concern is "can it drown" rather than "how will it drown". Organics on my homeplanet tend to be large and aggressive towards mechanoids.

Yes, precisely. Many organics engage at least occasionally in what is called 'interfacing reproduction', where the parent organics reconfigure their production coding with partners to create a new, unique set of coding for the offspring. Despite the name, this does not always involve interface. This relates to what we call the Arms Race hypothesis.

So... if someone could hear too well and it hurt him and this is just a hypothetical mind you I am asking for a friend here, y'know...
    The organics would keep him?
Look just because it has a lot of teeth and is trying to tear your frame apart doesn't mean it can't explain how the gas thing works if you ask it nicely. That's very anti-organic of you Silverburst.
what interfacing has a point for organics?
and that hypothesis has a weird name. Do organics alway run on their hands when they are mating or what?

This happens in some societies. In others they are not shunned but may not have the resources to support offspring. In still others there just may be strong social pressure for those with traits considered poorly adapted to not reproduce. It's complicated.

Most of it is used in internal chemical reactions to generate energy, generally in combination with solids and liquids that organics consume.

I don't need much because most of my energy is stolen.

It depends on the species and society. I'm sorry I can't tell you more precisely. However, I believe it's more likely than not a hypothetical individual would be taken care of. Possibly used to scout depending on the technology level.

Aha. No, think 'arms' as in weapons. It's a bit complicated, but I think you can follow it. Give me a moment.

Yes, yes it is. Nonsapients aren't very good at the "explaining" bit, unfortunately, but I could swear there were some organic medics here earlier. They might know...

What? Don't steal energy. PUT IT BACK!
Hah. Hahaha. Hah. Sorry that's. *restarts vocalizer* Good one.
That's a lot of faith you have in my ability to follow things, lady.

We do tend to prefer finding uses for people if we can. Since many organic species are warlike, due to it being a positive survival trait in many circumstances, if a use in war can be found then they have a place. Many organic species do not practice deliberate creation of individuals for purposes, but rely on natural variation to produce sufficient suited to tasks that are required.

That choice was made for me by those who altered me to what you see now. I have systems in my body that automatically absorb energy from nearby compatible lifeforms within about a half mile radius. I have managed to wrest a little control, but the most control I really have is to choose who to be around to absorb energy from. I try very hard never to harm anyone by so doing.

... Something tells me you are doing the thing where you are implying something.
And I bet the thing you're implying is that that's only cuz no one has figured out how to tailor make yourself some organic MTOs.
