My parents had me when they were trying to extricate themselves from a death cult. They were not successful. I escaped when I was ten after having already been trained as an assassin because they decided that the empathy mods I'd been born with would make me an even more exceptional killer than usual, as long as they managed to completely destroy my reproductive system and part of my endocrine system. I got away. But not before I was badly hurt.

I found myself on a world where there were a lot of problems and massively increasing social inequality. I became a cursebreaker and married a brilliant scientist who revolutionised our world's technology and learned alchemy and I became a professor myself. And then we found ourselves in the position of having to defend our planet from being sold out from under us by a group of "elected" officials who only cared about bribe money and personal connections. There was a bloody revolution and I took out a lot of people who wanted to destroy our world. I don't regret that a bit, and I can't say it wasn't often satisfying to bring someone to a well-deserved bitter end after they'd tried to destroy the people they claimed they were serving. So on one level, I also can't regret my training. Since the end of the war, I've done a lot of work helping to fix our society and I continued to teach. But I also have the only rose garden in the entirety of the Pennarine Imperium and it is amazing and I love it.

It wasn't until just this year that I was able to be healed so that I could get pregnant, though I have five teenage adopted children whom I adore and many, many students of my own and of my husband's who think of me as an unofficial second mother.

But I am really tired of fighting. I almost lost my life this year, I almost lost my husband twice, and even though the man who helped my husband save me and brought my husband back from clinical death has also become our mate, and I therefore cannot regret any of that either, I would really, really like it if I never had to do anything again but teach and research, love and be loved by my mates and children, give birth to and nurse these kits (and perhaps a few more) and bring them up, heal people, break curses and grow my roses.

 

Valiska, I know we had our differences, but I have found the hospital garden a pleasant place to sit in and volunteer in. Your rose garden is wonderful, and next time I would love to spend some more time there.

And that wasn't really her fault.

The garden was a mess when you left, but Ford had taken cuttings of all the damaged bushes and he got Steven to help regrow them in the hydroponics lab.

Now it's almost restored to its former glory, though the red climbing roses and eglantines have gone a bit wild and we love them that way.

I am going to have kits in the spring and Stanford and I have taken Severin, whom you must remember, as a third partner.

No child should have ever been treated like that. And while revolution is sometimes necessary, it is my absolute least favorite kind of war. I am so glad that you eventually found healing, and I hope that you get every chance to keep that peace.
