"Hey!" Sev's answering smile is bright, and he hugs Valiska, reaching past her behind her shoulders to reach Ford's.

He can't help quietly laughing at seeing that, but doesn't say anything. If stealing imaginary things makes someone happy...

He rolls his eyes. "I don't think any of us know how to sensibly run away from things."

 

"Bridge collapsed. Unseen rot in the timbers. I was nearby, heard the screams, ran to see if I could help. There were people trapped in the water under fallen bridge bits so I helped them out. I hope everyone's OK." She grins at Clover. "Claws come in handy to cut caught clothing or the like."

 

Wait, on Pennarian?

"No, I sneaked home and am on my way back afterward. It's getting easier for me to get places lately ... but only places I know well." She ponders a second. "I wonder if I could take someone else with me."

 

-is looking over his stitches carefully. everything seems to be in the right place, yes. frets about his needlework though. it could be better. not as unspeakably awful as his sister's though so hah-

 

What, are you going to introduce me to your wife?

-looks up from his stitches boggled and somewhat horrified-

Jame looks over at him, looks embarrassed, and doesn't say anything.

 

I love how even across universes we can't talk about anything important. Even as it is staring us in the face. Awkwardly.

 

"Still easier to talk with you than with him," she says, looking everywhere but straight at him. "Ok, I'll start you at the beginning.

"You remember the Merikit ritual we both ended up watching, just before you made me Lordan and gave me a chance at Tentir? I got pulled into it and got chosen as the Earth Wife's Favorite. I'm not sure how much of that you saw."

 

...I never made you Lordan, recall. I'm simply the Highlord's consort. Though she certainly spends quite a lot of time with the Merikit. For what reasons I don't know. The one time I attempted to learn what was so important we got into an argument and I ran away to Tentir to get the coat myself. Not that I should have I'm thinking. I'd burn it if I could.

That you're...apparently married to this Earth Wife is, well, it's not really explaining much to me, to be frank. Though it sounds a lot less like I had, well. Thought.

 

"Trinity! I didn't even stop to think about that! I fell into a Merikit ritual by accident and ended up being chosen as the Earth Wife's Favorite. I had to follow through. It was a promise of sorts to them, and to the native Gods of Rathillien, who do exist. Bad things would have happened had I not, but I was not married to her. The Favorite is the Earth Wife's secret boy on the side!" She grins about that.

 

...so you are having an affair with a god? As a man.

 

"Basically yes. But mostly symbolically. Actually she mostly grumbles about me and my reckless ways and how we're not really from her world. And rescues animals."

 

-is noticeably less tense-

That is...interesting. Does she fret after you as well or is it simply grumbling? My sister seems to have a cavalcade of people who constantly bother after her. The Highlord is highly skilled at falling down stairs, but not at eating apparently.

 

"I think she frets a little, but she hides it behind grumbling. And why is it that she won't admit she's me? Anyway, the Favorite holds that position for a year and must participate in rituals. Which I did, sneaking out from Tentir. So when the year was finished, they tend to give the Favorite a wife and home in gratitude. It was a girl who had been disgraced, as a way to raise up her standing again. We haven't actually slept together. Well, we have. But not that way."

 

To be honest, I don't think she's realized that you've caught her in her game. For that matter, why are YOU still playing along. You could have easily revealed her lie for what it was! Granted, part of me is glad that you haven't because this secret is supposed to be just that. A secret. However it certainly isn't one here.

-huffs and looks at his stitches. letters to lyra always take such time-

...that aside, it is just a political marriage then?
