I dunno, honestly. I'm just planning on asking Sunshine about it sometime, since I know he's someone I can trust not to mislead me.

 

*chuckles* I'm no medic. They told me more details but that was twenty-three years ago and long since flown away.

The new body's just different and has different demands, and it's connected up differently too. I had to learn to keep aware of my core temperature and keep it within optimal bounds, learn how far I can go in what temperatures without external heat, how long I can stay underwater before I have to breathe, which is about three days in a pinch but you don't feel all that good after about a day and a half. And the properties of the collector which keeps me alive. That part's important because I could kill people by mistake, or starve the body. What kinds of food to eat when I need to. How to tell if my skin needs to be moisturized, and what to use. Proper treatment of minor wounds. Things where the lessons I learned about my old body no longer applied.

I actually don't know. Maybe I thought that if he was lying and I hounded him enough, he'd give up on it...

 

Well, they're not wrong. I am an active threat. My collector is constantly sucking life from every sapient organic lifeform within about half a mile, all the time. I can control it a little but I can never shut it off. It's my duty to ensure that nobody is ever drained too far, and I'm very careful, but I am a life-sucking unnatural undead freak and I am dangerous, and I had to adapt to that.

Yes, indeed. I'm quite aware of that. I have considered whether my only moral choice is to go to somewhere isolated and die, but ... if I did that, I can't help anybody. I would rather square the balance by staying alive and paying the debts forwards to those that need help. I owe lives saved to counteract the lives taken, and that debt will be paid. I'm not sure how many I've killed, though. Only thirty-four by that method, but many hundreds in war ..."

 

An admirable decision. I sincerely hope you're able to reach that goal.

 

Historians are likely to consider the side I fought for to be the villains, I feel, and I would not argue against that.

 

Historians of wartime always like to paint the enemy as villains, but I'm sure Anhelia knows her planet much better than I do.
