...well. I mean. The Kaon Massacre was a thing. And the whole... war thing.

 

Yeah I have never supported a war more. I mean. Okay, it was horrible? On... both sides, it seems like. But hearing about pre-war stuff is just- something had to change, you know? And those fuckers set it up so you had to do horrible things to change things. So... it's their fault horrible things happened!

 

*Itch, being a contrary little fuck, shoves her head through the bars of Gay Baby Jail/Itch Castle with the most angelic expression she can manage. Look what a good girl she's being.*

 

Valiska frowned. "Okay," she says gingerly. "I need to be careful how I argue with you about this because my husband, the man I'm holding right now, had implanted thoughts, and I spent years working him through this, okay? The thing that I have to make people understand who have suffered overshadowing or possession--I think this is what you would call shadowplay, although the mechanism is likely different--is that the thoughts came from someone else. They didn't have the idea. The idea went through them."

She swallows. "People are often resistant to hearing this because they find it more terrifying to acknowledge that their brains and bodies were completely out of their control than living with the guilt over what they believe themselves to be responsible for."

 

Ford smiles at her. "You are," he says. It's easier to respond to that than it is to think about shadowplay, or whatever the robots/cool kids are calling it nowadays.

*Scratch sighs heavily and takes off his glasses, rubbing the bridge of his nose.*

-unusually gently and carefully- I think that´s hard to say from the outside, and possibly something that is different in every case. No two minds are the same. In the end it comes down to what the survivor of such a thing can live with thinking about themselves. It seems a bad idea to generalize.

Valiska looks up at Libre. "You just said the same thing I said, except you seem to be okay with letting people hold themselves responsible for things they didn't do. This used to be my job, you know." She shrugs.

 

Ford sighs. "As the only identified survivor present," he says, and then sighs. "I would really prefer that you argue some other topic."

He kisses Valiska. "I trust you," he says. "I believe you. So does everyone else you've ever helped, and you don't need to argue your point any more."
