I guess i-/ sucks abou-/ not ge-/-/ing -/o experience a real rela-/ionship there before i probably died and all, bu-/ a-/ -/he same -/ime, i-/'s sor-/ of nice -/o be away from all -/ha-/ for once. (Sloane hesitates, then decides to add, blushing:) Plus, i go-/ -/o mee-/ you, so i-/ seems pre-/-/y wor-/h i-/.

Paz forgot to manifest plates. (Northwests don't eat pizza straight out of the box, but the Library Kids sure do.) She puts a slice on a napkin and gives it to Norm.

 

*eats the pizza*

He was right. It is happiness.

 

"You can have another piece." Paz smiles. "I learned about this thing called sharing this year. It's pretty fun!"

She opens a Diet Coke for him. "Try this. Not everyone likes it, so it's OK if you don't, but my old boarding school ran on it."

 

I can? Awesome!

*drinks the Diet Coke* *laughs* It tickles!

 

Paz grins at him. "That's why it's fun." She slides him another slice. "Besides, we can imagine more if we want."

 

*takes the next slice* *grins* I know! It's like everybody has my powers and I don't have to grant anyone else's wishes!

*starts eating the slice*

 

"It sucks that you have to grant wishes," says Paz. "My parents made me do stuff I hated by using a bell. I am so happy that the adults I live with now only tell me what to do if I'm about to do something I'm probably going to regret."

 

*confused* A bell? How?

 

"The magic of classical conditioning." Paz sighs. "Cinnamon here is an animal and she can't always figure things out on her own. I need to be able to tell her what to do in an emergency, or if she's bothering people or other animals. I'm currently training her not to eat people food unless I give it to her, because she could eat something that might make her sick. So when she does what I ask, I make a clicky noise and give her treats with it so that the noise itself becomes a reward. That way I can get her to mind even if I don't have food on me. Well, you can do that with people, too, and you can make the sound mean bad things by making it when you punish them."

She frowns. "I don't punish her. I want her to trust me. If she doesn't mind, she doesn't get rewards. But then I only want to control her if she might get hurt or start a fight."

 

Huh. Oh. That's... weird.

 

"My parents were very weird. I am really sad about what happened to them, but I don't want to live with them. Being on my own was really scary sometimes, but...it was great, too. And being with them could be pretty scary, too." Paz frowns. Nothing has been the same since she learned her father considered actual cannibalism to be preferable to letting the townspeople come to their party.
