Long ago there were many, many more gods. So many that all their domains overlapped, and so they each fought for a piece of the world. One goddess discovered a Darkness, a void that devoured Color. She let it inside in her greed and it devoured hers, too, and slipped inside her skin. The Darkness destroyed many gods, learning from each and creating echos that also siphoned Color from the world, without which it would not exist, until they decided to put aside fighting each other aside to destroy it. Only one was clever enough to lead armies against it and its children, strong enough in sword and spear and net to survive facing it directly in a battle, but his heart was full of Silver and it was his siblings who had to convince him to head the fight. His condition was that he be king of all his siblings when the battle was won, and they agreed. His brother, who knew all things, divulged the Darkness's name the eve of the great battle, and names are full of power- when the general-king cut away the Darkness's head he wrought great Crimson against its name as well, and it could not heal.

But though it was lessened the head still lived, and no magic from any god could kill it. But it no longer feasted upon Color, only draining it away in small trickles from those who dared venture too close. So they buried the head deep in the blackest abyss of the ocean, where no gods nor spirits nor mortals wandered. But there was no promise that it would remain there, and if it did ever return no promise than any other god could match it. It was imperative, then, that the god-king lived, and nothing whose name is remembered is ever truly destroyed. But the Darkness had learned from gods before, and learned that a name could be sundered. So he went to his brother, who knew all things, and devised a plan. He would collect names, so only one who knew them all could destroy him, and each surviving god gave him a name that only they knew, and each of his siblings gave him a name that only their kin knew, and the mortals who had witnessed the fight not knowing the players gave him their own names, and no one but he and his brother, who knows all things, knows them all.

 

Wooooow, Spirit-Touched! That story is awesome!!!! Where did you hear that? Do you think the head will come out of the ocean and suck us all up one day? That'd be so cool!

He nods in understanding, feeling like he really did understand a bit more about them both. "Thanks for letting me know."
