I'm fine! We jellicles work in mysterious ways, you know. I was thinking about my third name--some of us spend our whole lives without ever really being sure what it is, so it's something my thoughts drift to pretty often!

 

Third name? How does that work?

 

yeah, no, you talk too much. have fun with your whatever.

 

Every jellicle has three names!

[he holds up three fingers to demonstrate]

The first one is an everyday name--something a human might call you, for instance. Some of us go by this one, and some of us are a little more secretive about it. The second one is a matter of pride! Mistoffelees is my second name, as a matter of fact. No two jellicles share a second name, and that one is much more suited to a conjuring cat than my first one, I think.

The third name, now that's where things get really interesting! A jellicle would sooner meet the Everlasting Cat than tell someone it. It's who we are, down to the core. And cats, well... we can be a touch mercurial! So sometimes we have to devote a few hours to thinking about our third name and what it might be, how it might've changed, and all that.

Do you have anything like that?

It sounds like the concept of a True Name. How do you know what your third name is?

 

[he shrugs. things like this are second nature to him, and finding the words to explain is difficult]

You...think about it, and eventually something feels right, or mostly-right, or at least not-entirely-wrong. And then you think some more.

Sort of? It has to be right, though! That's why we spend so much time thinking about it. If it isn't who you are, it's not your name.

 

at the VERY least you could reverse the curse since i apologized multiple times. do you KNOW how humiliating it is to go around looking like this??

"Talassani--my mother's people--have similar beliefs about names. Of course...we're felines, so that's probably why." She grins. "I'm called Jessie a lot, either by family or by people who can't believe my parents gave me the name they did--but my name is Jezebel."

The thing about her name is really amusing to Jezebel, because it fits her, even though by most people's logic it shouldn't. And because it was almost Lilith, but her mother wouldn't have it.

Less amusing is the stuff she's heard about the Beijada un-naming their people, or knowing that her mother had to go deep down inside herself to find her true name again, and that she's told it to her father partly because she loves him, and partly because he can use it to call her back when the Void rises up to meet her.

"It's also why we hate it when other people try to give us nicknames, unless the name is right. My mother will allow herself to be called Lissa by family and intimates, but people have tried to give her other names and she won't have it at all."
