Portals. Sort of. They open up randomly all over the place, to other worlds. Sometimes other places in the same world, but usually things on the other side look pretty different. We think the oni came through one, or they're still coming through them. I'd have to ask someone from the Empire, since they're more used to magic.

We're supposed to avoid them, but I got smacked into one by a really big oni with a tree branch and landed here.
