-taps her fingers to her lips thoughtfully- Rendering it down to absolute newb speak, a ping an 'are you there' sent out, and a pong is a 'yes I'm here.' The time it takes to get your pong back is useful for figuring out network latency, but the term grew to be used in other call-and-response situations. It's also used in sonar- the 'ping' is the outgoing signal and the 'pong' is the returning one, which actually came first. Socially a ping is an act of contact; most people forget about pong and just 'ping back.'

Not to be confused with pingback, which is a different thing.
