ACK is kind of ping but not.

It's short for 'acknowledgement' and pretty much means 'message received'. There's also NAK, negative acknowledgement, which rejects a previously received message or means something's wrong. When using ASCII you can use an enquiry character to see if another computer's operating normally- it'll send back ␆ or ␕. But a bunch of protocols are ACK-based, where they trigger when there's an acknowledgement and an acknowledgement often sends data of its own, and some are NAK-based where they only respond when they don't get an ACK because the NAK is probably due to an error.
