"Okay, money's not the dumbest reason, I've done that one myself, I used to be an assassin--though at the time I was convinced it was a holy thing to do, and now I know better. So I regret it now. But fun? If it's fun to kill people, just people, not someone who's fucked you over, that's really fucked up."

 

I don't think fun is a good justification because me having more fun isn't more important than another person's life.

"That too." Lissa grins at Lacuna. "But most people don't really enjoy killing. It's kind of scary to me when people do. We weren't taught to enjoy it, we were taught that it was an act of horrible, tender compassion." She shrugs. "I was taught to see the moment when the body gives up the soul as a holy moment, taught to think of myself as a midwife of sorts. Now...I know it's taking away all the choices another person might ever have, and the one thing that a person can truly say belongs to them. Now. I'll still do it to protect myself or the ones I love, but then I figure if someone is willing to kill me or my family they know they're taking a risk."

"But I'm not," Lissa says with a shrug, and a smile, even though she knows what works on the apefolk may mean nothing to Lacuna. "I'm just talking about me and what I think and what I've experienced. You don't have to think the same things."
