Things about Lillian that may become relevant: she's studying medicine in 1890s London after having to rather abruptly leave her home when the other party in a scandal blamed her entirely. She's a lesbian and mixed, and while her parents absolutely still care for her, they figured weathering the storm of being part native new money when everyone knows you like girls was just too much. That and schools in England took women before US medical schools.

Like all 17-on-the-cusp-of-18 year olds, Fedina fancies himself an Adult who thinks about Adult Things and doesn't have time for babies who are like, nearly three sweeps younger than him and clearly incapable of thinking about Adult Things.

He's also monumentally bad at judging age at a glance though. It's not usually an important life skill when everyone around you is around the same age by design.

 

Fwiw, it was Paz that asked Fedina if he was from Beforus, not Mabel. Fedina is just dogshit at telling humans apart, apparently.
