Huh, I hadn't really considered the idea that he's not a Galra at all? I figured that it's been - fff, I can never quite remember if it's one thousand or ten thousand, but "a very long time" anyways - and it's reasonable that there's been a bit of species drift over the years; someone from five hundred years ago wouldn't quite look the same as someone from 2017, and there seems to be some sort of weird mojo that Haggar's doing to keep Zarkon alive for this long.

Anyways, I figured that it was that 1) he doesn't really consider them to be the same race as him any more (and that "the Galra" serves as more of a nation-state indicator than a race indicator - although I grant that it'd still be weird for the leader of state to talk like that unless they're excessively formal), 2) it's entirely possible that he's just Always Super Formal for reasons of "fuk u, because I can" and 3a) it's been long enough that there's been speciation happening or 3b) there are multiple types of Galra and the subtype he belongs to has gotten less common over the centuries. (Or 3c, Zarkon has space mange.)

Tho he does look pretty much the same in those flash back scenes Black gave Shiro when King Alfor was still alive and they were supposedly allies?

 

He does, yeah, thus my suspicion that he has stood unchanging and the rest of the Galra-as-a-species have continued shifting and adapting to life as time rolled onwards.

Also there seems to be a lot of Lance? And maybe even a good bit of Hunk. I am not quite as gone on Lance as the larger fandom but I would like to see some more canon focus for him. And Hunk is my favorite paladin, so I am all here for more of him.
