you know before the promo dropped I was thinking about a sequel to the twitter comic where the gems watch the utena movie ... and then I realized that because they are rocks that pop out of the ground as adults en masse and can shapeshift into whatever they want, gems probably have no concept of stuff like incest and the whole "litterally turning into cars" thing would probably be the easiest thing to understand
who would even have that conversation with them is the question. I can imagine pretty much every human would get sweaty and awkward and pass it off to someone else. (except maybe Connie's parents who are suddenly deeply suspicious and concerned)
Would it be awkward? They know about organic reproduction, I can't imagine the taboo being difficult to explain.
Don't gems have like ... the opposite of an incest squick? A non-selfcest squick? Spoiler If I'm remembering right, in The Answer it was a Big Gross Deal that a Sapphire and a Ruby were fusing instead of multiple Rubies - and I know the Crystal Gems don't have a problem with that now, but I'm also wondering if there was some point at which a very embarrassed human had to explain to Rose that humans actually prefer not to have sex with people identical to them, actually it's super socially unacceptable for humans to have sex with identical humans, actually a great many humans aren't even interested in having sex with humans who have all the same organs as them, much less the same bone structure, skin colour, and facial features. That would be quite the conversation. Spoilered because not sure if spoilers and better safe than sorry.
Excellent! ...I wish we knew more about gem culture, because now I'm wondering when the concept of "organs" was introduced to them. I mean ... they're rocks projecting "hard light" (according to the wiki). So like ... when did they find out that some other species don't have a gem, and constantly maintain a mobile physical projection that's full of liquids and squishy lumps? Edit: the wiki says gems can "still" sleep and eat, so ... they used to be a lot more squishy, or something? I can't see why a rock with a hard-light projection would need to eat, or even sleep.
I think they're using still in another sense. "so-and-so can't do X but they can still do Y" It has nothing to do with their ability to do Y previously, but with their inability to do X.
Also what the hell are these gems made of that they're sentient and have the energy capacity to project hard light. And then interact with the world using said hard light. And transfer the information gathered by the projection into the rock for storage. HOW DOES THIS WORK I NEED SCIENCE
shhh no science now only magical aliens but no seriously sometimes my willing suspension of disbelief is broken when they change clothes instantly or build robots put of spare parts in the barn in like 5 seconds but then I remember this is a cartoon about magical space rocks.
