New episode tonight! You know, I'm disappointed. Why couldn't Cartoon Network schedule things so that it's new Adventure Time or something before Steven Universe? Now I have to be careful about my timing when I go to watch the new episodes, lest I have to sit through Teen Titans Go.
some of the teen titans go episodes are a little funny though. i like to see it as a parody, as in it's intentionally bad. it's also interesting to see new villains that were probably planned for the old show but never made it there. it's kinda meta. but besides that, YAY NEW SU I CAN'T WAIT.
OK, I will grant you that a FEW of their episodes are good. But mostly that kind of makes it worse, because IT COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT. (for preference I like the bits of the 'everyone-tells-a-story' episodes, like the fairy tale one or Raven's portion of the campfire story episode. Or, so far, the ones where the major plot is about Raven and Starfire and the male characters stay far far away.)
Spoiler: same old world i love how, at the end of the episode, lapis and peridot were so petty about living with steven. all "mine, mine, mine." lapis' flashback was a real anticlimax, though. felt way too barebones, like it gave away her backstory too quickly and too mundanely. and like, her Gem was broken by someone's foot. by accident. someone stepped on her while running away. yeah...
Spoiler I wonder if Lapis is censoring her story, because I also didn't think Gems cracked from that little pressure. I mean we don't know how heavy the Gems are but still... and it wasn't even like a giant Quartz stepped on her either.
Spoiler Oh man, poor Lapis. I feel like she's probably cutting a lot of the really bad details out, because that seems to be a pretty common theme with gems telling Steven things, not giving all the really awful details. Nice to have confirmation that it was Homeworld that put her in the mirror though, I know there was a lot of worry about the moral ambiguity there. (I wonder why they assumed she was one of the crystal gems? If she was caught in the war on accident, was it something like 'there's only one reason for a non-warrior caste to be here and that's if they're a rebel'? Explains a LOT of the hostility though. "Did you ever even wonder who I used to be" indeed.)
awwwww Spoiler i really liked the epidode, and peri at the start was adorable curious to see how peri and lapis get along from here on out maybe lapis will occupy the water tower thing she was sitting on. it seemed to have a room at the top she could stay in :3 that was very cute
@Imoyram I think that was a grain silo. I don't think it would have had a room at the top but they're hollow and it probably doesn't have any grain in it
Spoiler Recent episodes do seem to be rushing through some information/plots. I wonder if they're trying to set something up very quickly for some reason.
Very behind, but... insofar as it's useful to talk about the gems in terms of Earth cultures and races (not very), there's been some wank about Pearl being "coded white". And I was thinking about whether that's really a given. I'm sorta tossing around the idea of Tamil-coded Pearl. Because like... - Pearls have been a major export of Sri Lanka for thousands of years. They were actually known to the Romans, Greeks, and other Mediterranean powers as "where you get the awesome pearls from". - It is certainly possible for Tamil people to be very pale. http://www.thehindu.com/elections/t...mbly-election-results-2016/article8614696.ece (Allowing for gems to be not-exactly-human colors.) - Her hair color is actually pretty close to hennaed hair. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/02/d3/c3/02d3c394cce835800cbbc2bc34d786b3.jpg (Allowing for gems to be not-exactly-human colors.) - Her outfit is pretty close to the dudes' outfits in this, given that gem outfits are stylized and often skintight - . And even closer to , though I'm not sure if that's just costumery. - There were powerful Tamil dynasties centuries ago, but now they're a minority group without an independent state and some pretty significant discrimination in the last century or so, in addition to the obvious "British colonization bullshit". And there's been a bloody civil war going on in Sri Lanka for decades with horrible actions on both sides. Which sounds like a more interesting fit for Pearls' situation than the "ugh white people" that some Tumblr folks have associated with them. - And of course, since Connie's Indian and she mirrors Pearl's situation in so many ways, that could be an interesting interaction. Idk. Thoughts?
I've always sort of picked up on Pearl being influenced/inspired by cultures from that area, so I totally buy her being Tamil-coded
regarding body type stuff I figured out that the best way to describe my body type in steven universe terms is "Lapis, but with excess boob"
Oh wait also. Pearl's gem is in the location of a bindi. :| (I think Pearl is likely not intended as Indian-coded, but I think it's a fun interpretation to play with. :D)
