This explains my confusion about Flashback!Amethyst - it didn't make sense for her to "mature" that much in such a short period of time compared to overall Gem lifespans. The only idea I'd had so far was that due to her not being socialised on Homeworld, she had no reason to adapt her behaviour to a more "mature" or "civilised" manner, because it wasn't a disadvantage and perhaps it came more naturally to her due to her unusual development. My theory was that in Steven's early childhood, she learned that she would have to imitate some degree of human "adult" mannerisms in order to look after him, which was a very sweet thought, but still not totally convincing. This theory makes a lot more sense :) Spoiler: Steven Floats her not remembering if Steven could fly or not cracked me up
CALLED IT Spoiler: steven floats I've known/suspected that Steven's powers are tied to his emotions right since Gem Glow - also this was a really nice breather episode after the intensity of the last four. SU does filler so much better than anything else, imho.
...I thought that was obvious and am confused at people saying it's "confirmed" now?? Spoiler i mean, that his powers are tied to his emotions that's just... been demonstrated repeatedly...?
Spoiler i think it's 'cause this is the first time it has been outright said any of the characters that is how all of his powers work the first time the characters can see the patterns
Spoiler: barn mate/hit the diamond/steven floats barn mates: I FUCKING LOVE LAPIS but also I can also understand why Steven is having such a hard time conceptualizing why Lapis doesn't want to forgive Peridot. He's a sweet, empathetic kid, but he's also a sweet empathetic kid who isn't used to a lot of the horrors of abuse and isolation that most of us have for reference. And he's known Peridot for weeks now! That being said I love that Lapis just sort of.... slamdunked the ruby eye. hit the diamond: ruby you're too gay and really bad at this not that rubies are too bright to begin with (which is... endearing............) me too lapis, that is also how I react to someone hits the ball my way OH MY GOD YOU TWO ARE WAY TOO GAY "YOU'RE LYING TO ME" "TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER!" "THANK YOU" holy shit sapphire THATS TOO GAY I really hope we get to see the rubies again sometime (and what is UP with eye-ruby? There is something going on there) steven floats: Well it's been a while since we've seen everyone being Max Mom. This was cute for a filler, and I can imagine it's going to come at least partially into relevance later. I wonder when his healing spit is gonna come back?
Wait, what are peeps saying is out of character for Lapis? I was assuming the kinda surly thing, but. Peridot held her prisoner. Didn't much treat her with respect or delicacy. Or much regard at all... Was this the kinda guy who was like "Peridot and Lapis bonded over the abuse inflicted on them by Jasper and Peri would have saved her if she weren't so utterly terrified of Jasper! So terrified that she only yelled at and contested Jasper's orders a little"
Also. Animalistic gems + cracked Jasper + healing spit = that one fable where the kid pulls the thorn from the lion's paw. Didn't that lion try to eat the kid beforehand? That'd be fitting.
Heck all do I know. Lapis being cranky-traumatized makes sense. Nobody in this show is 100% cutesy cinnamon roll, not even Steven.
Oh, wait. Maybe people don't like how she was all Spoiler: paraphrased "Home world would not be super pleased with me after what I did to Jasper." I mean, the idea that even home world might consider a traitor tucking up one of their dudes to be a bad thing might grate if you're one of the "anything you do to an abuser is mega plus good and also super justified how dare you suggest otherwise" sort. EDIT: it also has Lapis claiming ownership of her actions. "The thing I did will upset people" is way far from "I was forced to do a thing and people will unfairly blaim me for it."
The one thing I don't like about "Jasper's gem is cracked and that's why we never saw her face!" theory is that I don't know when it could have possibly cracked. Her gem didn't even have a scratch on it when malachite poofed, and she fell face up. Unless there is a rule where a gem can take damage as a fusion and be fine but as soon as they split up the damage takes affect, or particularly stressful fusions in and of themselves can physically damage gems but it only shows up after they split, I don't see how that could work. It would be pretty interesting from a meta standpoint since fusions are supposed to be relationships, and abusive relationships hurt you. So bad fusion = real damage to gems. But it's not something that we've seen any evidence for yet, aside from gems needing to rest, but that seems more like a psychological/physical form thing, not a physical damage to the gem thing.
Spoiler: just in case I read a fic once where they were essentially performers--dancers, mostly, using water as a sort of special effect. Flight would work there too. And her delicate build would probably work for that purpose. So that's my headcanon.
People are saying that? I assumed "Jasper's gem is cracked" came from her Spoiler: (do we still need to do spoilers for s3e1-2?) falling unconscious into a giant crack in the ground during an earthquake
Spoiler: steven floats + in too deep You know, the way they presented In Too Deep as a four-week thing and also talked about the Summer Of Steven makes me think that In Too Deep was very specifically Super Watermelon Island through Hit The Diamond, and that the Summer Of Steven will continue as planned. See, SWI through HTD were all very much continuous--almost like one very long episode rather than five episodes, since they all picked up right where the previous one left off. I think In Too Deep was, rather than actually an "event," a specific arc. Also, Steven Floats, while not amazing, was fucking adorable. (AND NOW THAT STEVEN IS BACK IN TOWN...HOPEFULLY MORE CONNIE?? and greg too greg is gr8)
Garnet and Amy came out of Sugalite too hurt to move, and it was definitely a physical body hurt. And Pearl told Amy that getting upset would agitate the crack in her gem. That's all I got. Okay, how about, Jasper sleeps with her eyes open, and it's super creepy and weird and the crew didn't want to draw it. EDIT: See, also, reasons why Pearl did not try very hard to catch her.
i thought the emotions control the powers thing was confirmed way back when mr.gus said it in the april fools episode. it seemed like a cute bit of meta to go along with his gemsona, not a joke.
I don't know how many people skipped that episode. I know I did, because Uncle Grandpa's voice sent me into a rage spiral, so it is kind of nice to have confirmation outside of that.
