Cringey, but not as bad as it could have been imo. I came out of it even more firmly disliking Lars, though. He's fucking coddled by his parents, people are willing to get along with him so long as he isn't awful - BUT HE IS. HE IS AWFUL ALL THE TIME. THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN STAND HIM IS INEXPLICABLY SADIE, EVEN THOUGH SHE KNOWS HE ONLY LIKES HER WHEN HE WON'T BE SEEN IN PUBLIC WITH HER.

    UGH.

Hey @Mercury did you get all the way through it?
I think at least a few people would benefit from a synopsis to look over before watching, if you're up for that

    Yeah, I can try.

Steven is in the donut place talking to Lars and Sadie, Lars is being obnoxious about hanging out with Sadie. Steven is sad about this.
Somehow when Steven is asleep he's dreaming about Lars and tells him to quit being a jerk, and suddenly pops into his head. He wakes up AS Lars, who fell asleep with what's implied to be a porn magazine over his eyes and buck-ass naked. The nakedness kinda freaks steven out and he goes scrambling for clothes to protect Lars's privacy.
He goes downstairs and we meet Lars's parents, where we learn 1. That he's very coddled and his parents seem almost afraid of him 2. His real name is Laramie and 3. He's failing out of school.
Steven acts more like Steven than Lars, which means Lars's parents are delighted by their son not being surly, and comment as he rushes out of the house that he didn't curse at them even once!
As he's out he runs into the other teenagers in town, who are at first wary but then are pleased that Lars is being really decent for once, and are ready to include him in their activities.
He ends up going to Sadie's house to watch movies. She's really wary at first but finally agrees to let him in after he makes puppydog eyes at her, implying that he does that a lot to get his way. They watch a movie of StevenLars's choosing, which ends up being really sappy, then StevenLars confesses Lars's love to Sadie. She blows her top about it and we learn more about how he's awful to her - only acts like he likes her when they're alone, that sort of thing. She kicks him out.
Steven is really upset he upset her, so he knocks on her door and confesses he's actually Steven. She's all ?! but listens to him, and then is like, Steven? If you're in Lars's head, does that mean Lars is in yours?

They go racing through town, gathering an entourage of the teens and Lars's parents who are very curious to see what they're up to. They have to break in to Steven's house, and find Steven's body still asleep! The people following them are aghast when they come in and 'Lars' is slapping 'Steven' awake, but once he wakes up they switch places again. Steven has to explain and Lars FREAKS OUT - the worst thing for him seems to be that Steven was making him seem like he was a nice person.

Back at the donut shop for the final few minutes, and for some reason Sadie is happy to hang out with Lars now that he's back to normal?? That was really irritating and unsatisfying.

    I hate the
    "pretending to be someone else"
plotlines, just... SO MUCH EMBARRASSMENT. I'm also watching it in 10-second bursts.

tl;dr summary of The New Lars: whyever Lars is the way he is, it probably isn't due to anyone being mean to him. He's just a coddled asshole.

there actually isn't a whole lot of secondhand embarrassment in the episode (up until one scene near the end). mostly because steven is way better at being lars than lars is.

for me at least 'second hand embarrassment' cringe was minimal. i usually have a hard time with it. i think i was more.. irritated, than feeling that uncomfortable feeling.

Lars is just wholly unlikeable to me. and it makes me uncomfortable that they went with a 'sadie likes lars how he is' angle. because he's a dick to her and she deserves better. and if he'd just stop acting in toxic ways, he'd be doing much better and getting much farther with other people. he seems to at least know this though. but i don't think 'be who you are even if who you are is a huge toxic dick because somebody out there will still like you' is the best... moral to the story, i guess. he really needs to at least act kinder to the people he cares about, and i hope that lesson sticks.

i was also kind of irritated with steven to be honest. in a way he's a kid so there's a level of excuse that i can give him. but he is very much a 'fixer' and he doesn't think before he tries to fix. he doesn't seek input from the people he is trying to 'help' and it backfires as expected. as he grows i hope he comes to learn and understand that you can't just barge into other peoples' lives and business and fix things for them.

but it's also interesting to look at how steven acts in relation to how the gems act and how he might have learned certain behaviors that aren't really the best for dealing with humans.

Ehhhh...I do think The New Lars was probably the low point of Season 3, yeah.

But Season 3 as a whole has been fucking amazing. I can deal with one or two episodes that I probably won't rewatch much.

(Plus it's still better than House Guest. everything is better than house guest)

    Aww, I liked the ending!
I really want him to improve.
Sadie is such a nice girl, and she really has feelings for Lars. Lars also genuinely has feelings for her, and he feels like he needs to put on a "tough guy" persona to be respected.
He hates himself for being coddled all his life and he needs to know that it's okay to act sensitive. It's okay, shhh *paps*

I dunno, I had a tough time watching this episode. Secondhand embarrassment isn't quite the right word, but that was a rough ride.

I liked all of the supporting characters. I was not on board with Lars or Steven. I also am not such a fan of Sadie being a fan of jerk!Lars, but... that's a thing I tend to do.

Basic summary: Steven spends the day running Lars's body. He is nice to his parents (who are gently trying to tell him that mostly F's in school could... Maybe stand to improve?), he's Steven-flavored charming with the cool kids (they are impressed that he's much more enjoyable to be around than usual), and had a movie date with Sadie, where he's very out of character (read:nice) and it makes her uneasy right up until the moment steven!lars tries to confess his love, and she gets angry and doesn't believe him and kicks him out. And then Steven lets her know that he's the one actually driving the flesh puppet. Bodies are swapped back without much fanfare, bystanders are varying levels of uncomprehending/confused, Lars CONTINUES to be a jerk, and Sadie continues to crush on him as a jerk.
