no i think that it's some people went 'oh now we have a nice jasper so we can ignore regular jasper' ? or rather, i saw tumblr posts complaining about that view, and no actual posts espousing that view.
...but the two Jaspers have had pretty different life pressures and personalities from what we saw, of course they'll be different- uuugh.
I did, in fact, see a post saying "I loved Holly Blue too bad shes butch so Rebecca will never let her be happy," or something like that which. Suuuuure is a collection of words! There was also a post like "raises a glass to (one or two characters), flips the crewniverse off for Jasper and Bismuth," like fucking the parts of the show they like sprung fully formed from Zeus's goddamn skull before the eeeeeevil crewniverse ruined them!
...Holly is slightly more butch than Pearl and Rose, I guess, but she is NOT butch. also, what about the entire Famethyst? Who are big and buff and boisterous and friendly and incredibly sympathetic to the audience and nice to the humans?
Don't you know the correct, social justice viewpoint is that presentation is inextricably linked to bodytype? :D And like. I definitely get some of the critisms made wrt Jasper, Bismuth, and butchness being tied to violence. But we got the Famythyst, and they were all super sweet! Plz love the Famythyst.
Or hell, look at Ruby and most of the Ruby Squad--very butch to the point of being downright androgynous, and all the Rubies we've seen (even Eyeball to an extent!) have been fun and likeable and sympathetic. And yeah, Holly is pretty femme. And the Famethyst is...well, pretty fuckin' butch as a whole, and genuinely lovable. But obviously Amethyst and Ruby and their ilk don't count as butch, because they're consistently portrayed as good guys, right? </sarcasm>
Spoiler: Her Gems I think part of the thing about wanting to destroy ALL the Rose Quartz gems is because gems of each caste often seem to be treated as very interchangable. "Which Peridot" and the Rubies not even recognizing our Ruby, etc. so it makes sense that they would hold all Rose Quartzes at fault, just like all earth gems seem to be looked down on even when they come out big and buff like they were supposed to. ... What the fuck did Jasper do to prove herself and get out of there? Was she always just that perfect and great? We know she came out perfectly, but a lot of those big Ames looked pretty damn impressive too. Does she still deal with other gems looking down on her for being from Earth?
Oh btw here is the link to the first ep of the set on dailymotion- be aware that the first two eps are both labeled 11 by whoever put them up, bc those two are going to air back to back
Spoiler: leaked episodes i love how, in these episodes, the diamonds were sympathetic but the narrative also managed to show how much they dehumanize everyone else. like, that was almost chilling, how the diamonds balanced precariously between loveable and hateable, how i could want them to be happy and want them to be defeated and feel bad about wanting them to be happy. and just, the depiction of dehumanization and prejudices in these episodes feels so, so, so viscerally real. it's awesome! feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelsssssss... a really good demonstration of steven universe's central theme of how even the most awful people are people and deserve sympathy.
Spoiler: I know, right? Greg being sympathetic to Blue Diamond and her being touched by it and it just being a very sweet scene... And then she casually kidnaps him because he's little more than a likable animal to her. I love it.
Spoiler yes yes yes that :D:D:D at the start of the scene, i assumed it was just an usual steven universe redemption arc thing, in which people are healed by loving and connecting with others. and i was wrong and it feels really natural that i was wrong. blue diamond is a diamond, after all, and it would actually be pretty weird if one moment with greg lead her to immediately reconsider her view of humans. and yeah, it's wonderful how steven universe can be dark and hopeful and believe in people's potential even as it shows their worst sides, how it doesn't give up on honesty for sweetness. :D:D:D that it is willing to break away from its personal cliches (like, Solving Problems With Love For and Connections with Others, Defeating Enemies By Loving Them) when the time isn't right for them. :D:D:D
Spoiler: that will be all i just realized that what's the use of feeling (blue) can become "what's the use of feeling, blue" if the punctuation is changed. which transforms it from, "what's the point of being sad?" to "what's the point of feeling anything, blue diamond?" and like, the title of that song is rife with double meanings. "blue" as in sad and blue as in blue diamond, "what's the use of feeling blue" and "what's the use of feeling" both being valid phrases inside the song's title, each with a slightly different meaning... just wow... it's amazing how much they managed to fit into just the title of that song. :D:D:D
Spoiler: that will be all three posts in a row might be a bit much, but... i'm really worried that those rose quartzes are destroyed now. like, there are narrative reasons why they're probably not (they weren't actually seen being destroyed, the show wouldn't introduce something like that and have it destroyed offscreen) but i don't see much, for sure, character-wise, that would stop yellow diamond from shattering them. obviously something consistently has (maybe she doesn't want to set blue against her, doesn't want to make blue angry; maybe she thinks that them being bubbled isn't that bad an alternative to them being shattered; maybe she uses how blue feels about them to manipulate) but i don't know what exactly and i was initially very confused by how the dominant assumption was that the rose quartzes were all still whole.
Spoiler: Bubbled gems Since theyre probably important plot-wise im not too worried about them being shattered, at least yet(also if it helps- Yellow Diamond probably comes to the zoo extremely rarely and thus doesnt have much of a reason to think about the bubbled gems usually) but what i want to know about them is who bubbled them? Those bubbles are very clearly all pink, and we haven't actually seen any pink gems besides Rose, Steven, and Pink Diamond. I suppose it could have just been aesthetic and some unimportant gem bubbled them all but like. This is steven universe. All details can be questioned and have the potential of giving a real answer later on
