In lighter news, I was out at a pub with friends and I showed them my makeup test, they think it's pretty good for the most part. Also, we were talking about distractions around us. One friend was watching a poker game on the tv, her husband was watching a lady kick ass at the pool table, and I was watching a gal with pink hair. "Because pink hair." And my friend was like "aww, you really are like pearl!" And I'm like yes, yes I am ^//^
There was a trailer and a teaser video leaked from SDCC!!!! I am pretty darn sure these are real. Spoiler: Spoiler videos A trailer hinting at some things ahead, and... The vastly superior teaser video. I don't care what you're expecting. This is not what you're expecting. Y'all. Spoiler: react Don't mind me, I'm just bouncing and squealing alone in my bedroom. Lars. Is a pink undead space pirate. You know??? The guy who was just here to awkwardly flirt like two seasons ago??? I am fucking laid waste, I love this show. Lars is a pink undead space pirate!! With a crew of beautiful oopsie baby space ladies!! Holy shit damn!!! What the shit!! I love this show!! Pink undead space pirate!!! I can't even remember what happened in the other video this is too amazing!!! Someone else please watch this
Spoiler: Yo YELLS ALONG WITH YOU HOPY SHIT Great new outfit, offcolors being a rad team, Lars being a sharkyshit Ominous trailer vid eye emoji eye emoji eye emoji
Spoiler Lapis? What about her? Also, why is Lars finally getting character development now after four seasons of basically nothing? Why is he a space pirate? How did they get a ship?
Spoiler Alright, dude, people can be excited about characters they like without defending their choices. The video explains that he stole a ship and provides a few details about how (stole it from emerald with stealth). I assume he's doing it because stealing spaceships is the easiest way to return to earth with the off-colors, which is his stated motivation. They were working on developing other, more central characters when they thought SU would only be a season long--and then three seasons, and now, apparently, more. The crew was granted the time for the development of extra characters long after the show started. They also, given the lightheartedness of the scene, appear to be having fun. "What a shame, they aren't featuring plot elements or characters I'm more interested in" would have done fine.
Spoiler i still dont like non-human lars but it looks like ill have to put up w it for the rest of su >8V EDIT THE SECOND, since i edited the first as it was going through post mod and it got wiped: like, couldnt lars have been redeemed WITHOUT literally being stripped of his humanity? he still couldve gone to homeworld, he still couldve almost died (but actual almost death, not death and then pink resurrection) steven couldve stayed on homeworld a while longer and there couldve been like, actual suspense over whether he wouldve gotten home or not. pink lars is feeling more and more like a lazy deux ex machina tbh fakeedit: also wheres he getting his clothing? isnt all clothing on homeworld manifested out of light from everyones gems?
Spoiler: Screaming about the vids Okay, that first video was just... ominous ominous Plot Hints everywhere and Steven being avoidant ("Everything's fine!" Steven that is textbook repression) and Connie is Not Okay and I need to know why and Sadie, poor Sadie, and poor Lapis, those clenchy fingers on Peridot's shoulder, and then sudden badassery, and Pearl what the fuck happened to you, and everything is in space and exploding, and Smoky Quartz is coming back oh my God, and Peridot is talking to someone who needs to be convinced to fight for Earth, and as far as I'm concerned that's Jasper, okay? Until definitively proven otherwise. And then the second vid was complete whiplash, all the off-colors having fun and being adorable, and Steven and Connie just casually dropping in and there's Shit Going Down, and the titles, and Lars has finally found his confidence in a good way and I like that, he is much better at playful-snarky-strutting then he is at Performatively Jaded Teenage Boy, and his parents sent him a care package for his space adventure and that is adorable, and there's a new gem (!!!) just completely losing her shit on the screen, and she looks like a one-eyed Dolorosa and, and Please tell me this is all coming soon
Hostility wasn't my intention so much as confusion. My apologies for sounding hostile, I'll work on that. Tone is hard to convey via text. Spoiler I will be frank, I never liked Lars. It's good to see he has some more sympathetic points. But for the first four seasons he was a grumpy jerk who worked at the donut shop, and now he's a zombie space pirate? And heroic? And actually cares about people besides himself? It's a very sudden shift. On top of that, I haven't even seen the video with Sadie and Lapis in it so I don't entirely know what's going on.
In that case I apologize for bringing hostility into the conversation myself. It seemed to me like you were intending to be snide at people for being excited about things you don't care about yourself but I shouldn't have assumed ill intent. Wow, I've been nuts lately. Time to take a moment. Eta: 'snide' not 'smide' christ self
Oh sorry I just now saw what I did. "Lapis? What about her?" Was meant to be "but wait, what about lapis, I am curious about her" not "uh, who gives a shit about lapis, previous poster?" Christ, self, again.
Spoiler Re: Space Pirate, I'm guessing it's Rule of Cool. Probably also said "oh man Captain Harlock was AWESOME we need to do an homage to it at some point, that would be so cool". I think for a long time, Lars was the character being used to demonstrate someone struggling with maintaining a certain kind of Image, even if it's unhealthy and no one else actually expects that of them? Lars worries about looking Cool and Not Lame, and sometimes that's along axes that smell a bit like toxic masculinity norms or racism -- like, he was worried Baking and an ubi log cake (which is a Filipino food) would look lame. There's a lot you can do with a character like that, because Lars and his fixation on Looking Cool affects other people, so we've had several seasons of seeing other people dealing with Lars and liking him despite the fact that sometimes he makes you want to headdesk. There's stuff you can do with him if he stays that way that you can't do after he moves past it.
