Spoiler: more of the spoiler Hell, if Blue yelled at Pink before she was supposedly murdered then no wonder she’s so fucking sad. And no wonder Steven, who has incredible empathy and apparent phantom memories in which the other diamonds are mother figures, weeps extra hard when she does. Even if she wasn’t a good mom, she’s grieving her child, who’s gone for real now. It’s a loss they have in common. Your grandma thinks you murdered her daughter and she’s so sad.
Question for Jasper fans- Should Jasper be referred to as a “big buff Cheeto puff” or a “flamin’ hot cheeto”?
Spoiler i wonder if lapis knows about rose, because there's basically a 0% chance that pearl wasn't constantly like "show me pink diamond's palanquin" "show me pink diamond's quarters" "show me pink diamond giving the earth colonization orders" "show me pink diamond surveying earth" etc and then crying and she knows how she talked about pink diamond, and now she sees how she talks about rose, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist granted i really can't fathom that she gives a fuck, but i'm still curious
Spoiler I mean I don't think Pearl would expect the mirror to have seen that - even if she did, I don't think Lapis was actually present for that and so wouldn't be able to show her. Plus she doesn't seem to have used the mirror in a while, just keeping it in storage in her Gem for ages.
Spoiler i did forget the "must see to show" thing, but i don't think we have any foundation to say lapis wouldn't have seen some of those things. we know so little about her origins. the only hint we have is that she was present on earth during the war.
Spoiler/inappropriate humor below Spoiler If a Pearl has a crush on her Diamond, does that mean she wants the D?
Spoiler: ....on shapeshifting and Pink so...Pink Diamond and Rose Quartz have pretty different skin color, and to some extent different hair color. which has got me thinking. the Gems we've seen shapeshift before....haven't ever changed color schemes even a little. I'm thinking of Garnet and Amethyst, here. does that mean Pink's shapeshifting is somehow different, maybe more powerful/capable than a normal Gem's? on one hand, Pearl shapeshifts to look like a definitively convincing Rose Quartz, but the two are EXTREMELY close in coloring in some ways, and I honestly cannot tell if Pearl's normal colors--skin and hair, I mean--alter at all in her shapeshifting to Rose. also, I have to wonder if the fact that Pearl seems to...reflect colors in some scenes, looking more blue in one scene and more pink in another, could influence her coloration in shapeshifting a little if she so chose. on the other, Amethyst didn't grow up on Homeworld, and excepting that time with Jasper, would never have had reason to try and change her colors--it might just be a thing that Gems can do but she doesn't know how. the only time we see Garnet shapeshifted is, I think, Steven tag, which is hardly a time when she'd need to change color. at the same time, while Pink shifts color, I freely admit that the colors of Rose and the colors of Pink, while DIFFERENT, are rather close in coloration (light peach and her pink skin tone aren't THAT far apart, imo), where purple and ORANGE are kind of....not, which makes me wonder if maybe all Gems CAN change color, but just not a whole lot outside their realm of usual color. that would also account for Pearl being able to look like Rose--Rose is mostly white, dark pink for the hair (similar-ish to Pearl's), and pale peach for her skin--these aren't colors that are super outside the realm of possibility, I think, if you can only shapeshift to colors near-ish to yours. but I do have to wonder how Pink did that, and what restrictions there might be, if any. I mean, size I can accept. we've seen that before. but altering coloration even a little and altering the way your Gem faces, those are COMPLETELY new, and I'm really curious about if it's some sort of Pink-specific or Diamond-specific thing, or if it's a thing all Gems can do and just something no one ever really tried before so no one ever really....figured it out, up until Pink herself needed a nice, convincing Rose Quartz rebel disguise.
....huh Spoiler: huh y'know people have commented on Rose's coloration varying a lot and I could see a few explations for that now 1. SU characters tend to not be on model that's just the weird art the show has 2. Rose Quartz being a false form and all she's not perfectly solid, and sometimes Rose fucks with/fucks up her own coloration 3. ....what if, for a while, Pearl and Rose were SHARING THE RESPONSIBILITY of being Rose Quartz and Pearl couldn't get the coloration quite right because she isn't a Diamond and can't shapeshift so well,
Spoiler: spoilers the third idea is so cool, and adds an extra dimension to pearl's thing about rose, i think. like, it must be weird to talk about being into someone who sometimes, not just during one incident, technically was you. Spoiler: nsfw pearlpink/pearlrose thoughts and on another, more raunchy note, i'm imagining pink and pearl having sex when one or both of them is in rose quartz' form now.
Spoiler: Hmmmmmm My only issue with this is that we’re shown Pearl-as-Rose’s eyes as being light blue, which is a pretty distinct tell that she’s actually Pearl—or, at the very least, Not Rose. It’s wayyy more blatant than a slight palette shift. So unfortunately I’m not sure how well that’d work. FWIW, I think option 2 is the most likely of those. The one instance I can think of where the coloring was notably off-model at all (tbh I would need side-by-side references with Rose because I never once noticed), outside of the rare outright coloring error (such as that one bit in Bismuth where Bismuth’s pants seem to disappear), is that Pearl’s hair looked (to me, at least) significantly lighter in parts of season 4, and that was an anomaly rather than just the show’s usual stylistic weirdness. (If anyone has evidence of Rose shifting palettes I’d love to see it, though—I don’t DOUBT it, I’m just a bit baffled because I never noticed myself?)
Spoiler: a single pale rose spoilers i'm rewatching a single pale rose and i'm thinking about how pearl is really good at straight-up lying when it comes to rose's secret. like, she put her phone in her head on purpose so steven could find out about it and then was all like, "oh no, i've lost my phone in my head, can you get it out, please, steven?" in a believably distressed way. and just... i love that. :D:D:D i love that pearl can be really great at lying and evading when she wants to be. :D:D:D
Spoiler: -waves hand in wishywashy motion- It's less like she changes her entire palette and more like she changes her hue over time? Especially in flashbacks she tends to be REALLY pink, the farther back it goes, the more pink. She gets much paler in recent appearances, especially in Steven's tape, but that could very easily just be stylistic choice, either irl as the show went on, or symbolically showing her fading in vividness as she grows older. (Or looking more human as she gets older.) Esp. since the brightest pink Roses are in story flashbacks, stories told by Garnet, which are always vivid and simplistic, usually because she's trying to give recaps or quick lessons. The Pearl-blue eyes were really obvious. Contended. But I will defend my point in saying that we saw those blue eyes inside Pearl's head as she tried as hard as she could to demonstrate to Steven that he was seeing Pearl disguised as Rose. I feel like her disguise would have been as perfect as she could have made it in reality, and if she could fake the appearance and location of her Gem, which is the most important part of a Gem, I feel like she could have faked the eyes too. It would be harder, however, for Pearl to fake reasonable confidence and cool, or Rose's quick decision-making, so I couldn't imagine the measure being taken often... but I COULD imagine it being used to demonstrate real anger and aggression towards Diamonds, which is harder for Pink. If we're willing to assume that Pearl could/would do that which is debatable. Heavily debatable.
Spoiler Given how she freaks out when Steven gets the hyacinth emoji I think it wasn't really a conscious action, but something undertaken by the diamond-era sub-Pearl.
Spoiler that makes sense. but pearl is also really good at lying in the sardonyx arc so, at least, even if you're right, pearl is still good at that stuff. and it's something i like a lot about pearl or, at least, about my interpretation of pearl.
Two things to note regarding shapeshifting, one spoiler, one not. One- In season one, the beach party episode, amethyst shapeshifted blue jean shorts and a green fanny pack. Spoiler Two- Pearl didn’t shift the position of her gem in the flashback, it was hidden by her bangs. When she tears up and turns toward the sound of someone screaming, her hair shifts and you can see her pearl.
