I know literally no arabic but listening to Cheeseburger Backpack was awesome. When Pearl said something like "la", was that the equivalent of her going "oh" in english? Because that specifically was adorable as hell and I love her dub VA a lot.
I now know 150% more arabic than I did three minutes ago! AWESOME (also ugh I watched Steven the Swordfighter and when he gets triggered during the movie at the end... ): kid needs a therapist. but also I love all their VAs.)
Many people in this show need therapists. So very many. Especially Pearl. Pearl needs like 20 and also a good psychiatrist who specializes in weird space rocks. Also I expect Pearl to say "tayyib" a lot. Tayyib means...delicious! It can also be used to say that someone is a good person, basically? But one thing it gets used for a lot is...it's a kind of space filling word? Similar to how we use "ok" or "well then". Reason I expect that is because my Arabic professor says it A LOT. Even when speaking in English. tayyib is just her fucking thing. And that woman is basically the platonic ideal of mother given form. God put her here to mom. To mom to the extreme. Pearl and her aren't very similar people at all save maybe their obsession with cleaning things and also MOMLY WORRY. But I just keep expecting Pearl to be like tayyib all the time.
Yeah, poor Steven. I'm kind of hoping for an episode where Connie or someone tries to convince him to get help and talk to someone about his issues, but he thinks that the Gems won't understand for some reason, only for them to be completely supportive and understanding.
tbh i'm not sure the gems WOULD understand, but that would be okay! They seem to understand Steven is fragile in body, but-- even if they do understand and recognize trauma as a thing that can make you headill, which I am not sure they do, or else they would've therapied Pearl already for god's sake someone get her on a couch-- they aren't good with conceptual, abstract problems, by their own admission. They punch things. It would be really nice to have a steven-and-boardies episode about mental health too, tbh. Or Steven and Connie's mom, if Connie's family eventually finds out more about Steven's life? that might be a while away, but I'd want to see it.
By 'understand' I mean that they wouldn't think less of him for having the brain issues, or that he's weaker or something for having them! The Gems' own understanding of psychology is probably really shaky.
oh yeah that makes more sense, 'grasping that there is a situation and it's not steven's fault and they still love him' is 100% what i would expect from his bevy of moms
Something I love about Steven Universe is the fact that you can introduce the method of Fusion shown in this cartoon into any fictional universe with polymorphic sentient beings and it would work. I just. Love it.
http://flamma-man.tumblr.com/post/123672257601 Found one of the things I mentioned! I've seen other tweets about the whole gemtlemen thing before too- will add them if/when I happen across them.
well. I wonder what the people who keep asking creators stuff until this kind of immediate annoyance comes up are thinking they will accomplish except for snark?
Ugh that's horrible :/ I hate it when creators have to basically flee from their fanbase because it collectively forgot how to treat them with basic human decency.
You know I think it's ironic that the tumblr kids who say Pearl is either a precious cinnamon roll and everyone who hates her is HORRIBLE AND ABLEIST 4EVER and the people who think she is basically SATAN'S SWEATY TRASH PILE are both exactly the kind of people who really need to learn the lessons presented in these episodes: Precious cinnamon roll crowd: your actions aren't suddenly harmless because you are mentally ill. Trash pile crowd: people fuck up and that doesn't make them horrible and irredeemable. Seriously this week has been all about people trying to communicate and work through their issues even if it means fucking up and hurting people. Presented in a nuanced way that doesn't make everything wonderful and perfect again like kid's shows normally do at the end of an episode/arc however remains optimisic that everyone has room to grow into better people and that everything is going to be ok in the end as long as people talk to each other. I think that's wonderful and a lesson that everyone needs to learn, but I think it's especially relevant in places like tumblr where teens and young adults are still figuring their shit out and there is this pervasive culture of fear and anger when it comes to hurting other people.
It's an exaggeration of tumblr's tendency towards black and white thinking. Either you can't criticize a character because they are coded as neurodivergent (and thus it makes the criticism a direct attack people who share this divergence because there is also a problem with separating fiction and reality on tumblr as well) or a character is flawed and these flaws make them horrible forever (which also bleeds heavily into call out culture, where people will dig up actions/words from years ago as proof that someone is racist/sexist/transphobic/etc. for the rest of their live and any growth they may have had and apologies they have made are not to be trusted). Those words specifically came from people calling their favorite characters/people cinnamon rolls and characters/people they don't like trash.
makes sense. yeah nah, I don't dislike Pearl because she's neurodivergent, I dislike her because she is really patronising and nagging towards Steven, and she basically sounds like my grandmother who made me think I was an idiot when she said similar things like Pearl does in the first season. also it's funny that trash is negative, I thought it was always a positive in tumblr speak, or maybe it needs interaction with homestuck fandom? interesting.
Yeah at least in the homestuck fandom it seems to be an affectionate pet name for characters you know are horrible but you still like a lot. But I know some of tumblrs social circles use it as a negative descriptor
