honestly, this is the second episode to make me start crying, because WELP Spoiler: over relating to peridot over here I definitely do the "I found an approval button LEMME SPAM IT PLEASE LIKE ME" thing, and I piss people off a lot. I really don't know how to person, so I say stupid shit and offend people and then panic because I don't know what I did or why everyone's upset. I'm really glad she got to apologize at the end. Plus, it felt sorta similar (not exactly, but enough to upset me) to a mess that's been going on in my friend group that was probably caused by me not knowing how to person.
SO I GOT THE BOOK. HERE IS MY LIVEBLOG. Spoiler: BOOOOOOOOOKS! YOUNG CRYSTAL GEMS RIDING IN A CONVERTIBLE AND BEING ADORABLE. GOD BLESS. (Also, Amethyst hanging down from the copyright page thing. <3) Rebecca Sugar's letter at the beginning is SO CUTE and it does a good job of playing along with the idea that it was Steven himself who wrote it, which I love so much omg. This book is adorable so far. A bit more kiddish than the show itself, but I DON'T EVEN CARE IT'S SO CUTE. Apparently when Ruby and Sapphire first fused, it was rare for Gems of different types to fuse at all, and if two gems of the same type fuse...I haven't gotten there yet but WE WILL SEE. Less than ten pages in and this is already the single gayest children's book I've ever read. Actual exchange with my mom: ME: This is the single gayest children's book I've ever read. MOM: What about Heather Has Two Mommies? ME: I think it's a little gayer than that. All the Gems are talking about what they have in common with Steven EXCEPT PEARL WHO SAYS HE'S LIKE ROSE PEARL YOU ARE SO FUCKING GAY AND SO FUCKING THIRSTY AND I WANT TO HUG YOU. So apparently part of the reason Rose had Steven was because she wanted to experience childbirth, but it was also largely to bridge the gap between Gems and humans! That actually makes a lot of sense, I think--I've always wondered about that. Steven thinks his birthday outfit suits Garnet. ;u; And she's always willing to help when Amethyst and Pearl try to embarrass him, which is SO CUTE. THEY HAVE THE BIT WHERE GARNET TALKS TO DR. MAHESWARAN AND TELLS HER THAT STEVEN AND CONNIE ARE PLAYING WITH SWORDS OMG THAT IS LIKE MY FAVORITE GARNET MOMENT EVER TBH Apparently Amethyst has experimented with male forms, with the Purple Puma being one of them. That's pretty cool! And it also kind of explains why she was so kid-like in Story For Steven and We Need To Talk, I think, despite her being born at her current size--she was experimenting with a more childlike form. Steven says he's happy that Amethyst was safe in the ground when the war was going on Steven why are you so precious omg. STEVEN: Amethyst can almost hold her own against Garnet! GARNET: That's no small thing. garnet is fuckin op Steven is pretty sure Amethyst was messing with him when she told him to slam his face into a bowl of cereal to stop the foot. Note that he says he's pretty sure, not that he's positive, and that sometimes it's hard to tell when she's messing with him. I love Amethyst and I love Steven and I love this book. Pearl's hair color confirmed to be intended as pink. This has always confused me, especially since it looks like a different shade in flashbacks--glad that there's a canonical color range now. XD "Pearl and Mom were really close." GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Garnet says Pearl "always was a force on the battlefield." More like battleFEELS, amirite?! ...anyone? PEARL IS GEM AUTISTIC CONFIRMED (well not explicitly confirmed but also p obvious imo) "Pearl really likes to be right, which is okay, because she usually is! Except when I'm right. Or Garnet. Or Amethyst." steven u lil shit Steven spends a lot of time thinking about how he's half-Gem and half-human. Steven, you sweet child. ;-; And he thinks her statue moving must have been his imagination. "I also have a friend, Lion. He's a lion!" Jasper confirmed for a Quartz gem! (I mean, we already knew, because jasper is non-crystalline quartz, but still--kind of sheds some light on Peridot's comments about Quartzes in Too Far...) Steven hands the book over to Garnet for the fusion section. Okay, so if two gems of the same type fuse, it's not quite a new being? So presumably if two Pearls fused, it'd just be A Bigger, Badder Pearl. (Presumably, three Pearls fusing would make The Biggest, Baddest Pearl.) The part about fusions as relationships is really important for kids to see, I think. "Some relationships are healthy and stable, like me. Some relationships are unsustainable, even if they seem promising at first. Some are furiously short, some are dangerously long. Some are toxic mistakes that are best avoided. Some are wonderful surprises that open you up to new ways of thinking and being. (...) a truly great fusion is like a truly great relationship: its power is amplified by trust, respect, absolute honesty, and constant communication." Like, this is seriously important shit for kids to know. Opal is apparently super forgetful. She's also a surprisingly balanced fusion, which makes sense when you really think about it--after all, Ruby and Sapphire are pretty different, and Garnet is very stable and balanced. But since it's hard to hold a balance like that, and Amethyst and Pearl don't have the strong lesbian relationship bond Ruby and Sapphire have, so it doesn't take much for Opal to split apart. Apparently part of why Sugilite is hard to split apart is that she's a particularly fun fusion to be. "Alexandrite is an incredible force on the battlefield. When Pearl, Amethyst, and I fuse together with a singular goal, we are unstoppable. But when the singular goal is a dinner party with a human family, we are very confused, and we are very confusing, and we are very sorry." Apparently Malachite actually does completely lack her own voice, due to her instability. So I guess we won't be hearing a separate voice for Malachite at all? Garnet "could not be prouder of Steven and Connie" for forming Stevonnie. Awwwwwwwwwww. <3 Aww, that's the end. It was really cute! I do wish there'd been a bit more exposition but it was still a fun romp with some cool revelations, and it was definitely worth buying. :D
I do the same thing (try to mime stuff out with my hands) irl when I can't describe something/lost the word for it. Sometimes I can words and make a neologism or make an approximate description of what I mean, but usually Words Are Hard and it's just a lot of going "the thing!" and "you know" and other filler words and making a lot of interpretive motions. So while it probably was a rude gesture akin to that, I don't think that would have been her intention. (so yeah I rewatched the episode and I am pretty sure I communicate like Peridot irl. Just less of an angry jerk. Though to be fair if I went to a "backwards planet" I would probably be a really angry and unintentionally rude jerk too)
Yeah, today I was telling my roommate that I had filled out the form she'd reminded me about the other day, only the conversation went more like this: Me: "Oh yeah! I did that thing! The. um." [makes wavy hand motions in the air, trying to words] "thing..." Roommate: [miraculously guessing correctly what I meant] "Oh, the FRI form? Yeah, I haven't done that yet..." So, yeah. Could be rude gesture implying fusion, could also be just trying-to-think-and-form-words hand movements.
So I just realized a thing. In We Need To Talk, Pearl says Greg is "a novelty, at best." Now look at the revelations in Back To The Barn. WAY TO PROJECT, PEARL
...conjecturing re: Too Far... Spoiler uh. I'm. Slightly suspicious of the tackling off-screen and full focus on steven? I'm. I'm nursing a pet hypothesis that the two fused? Like. Hella briefly? For me... that would explain both Amythest and Peridot's expressions when Steven notices them... along w/ the dust cloud? We do not zee any dust in the background when the drill stops and most defusions come with a cloud poof.... so... I'm. I'm really suspecting that we missed directly witnessing something very interesting. O_O
Spoiler ALL ABOARD THE PERIDOT/AMETHYST TRAAAAIIIN Seriously though I think I actually... really ship them? I want them to at least become awful best friends. Maybe more. Terrible, terrible immature dorks. This is weird to me because this is one of the first times I've ever shipped a pairing that wasn't already canon. :U
Spoiler: Too Far Idk, I think Peridot's discomfort with Garnet is pretty clearly a parallel. Especially not being able to answer why it's wrong and resorting to hand motions. I love my little biggot.
Dang. I was angling for the deep blue color/iridescence combo - there's a few opal varieties that work, but they've all got kinda unwieldy names. Otoh, there's no strict in-universe rules about doubling...
It is canon that there are several Pearls so... I am fairly sure we can have more than one Labradorite! I have my own Labradorite gemsona too, actually:
ok so normally I don't do reaction videos but Luka posted this and I may have accidentally snorted loudly trying to keep myself from laughing at midnight while other people try to sleep I can't decide if the best part is: his face when Ruby an Sapphire fuse yelling "DIE" when Peridot showed up on the screen his little during "stronger than you" "nooo save lapis" D: "lion." at the end.
reading loreweaver's liveblog of rose's scabbard is really weird for me, since that episode was the one in which pearl/rose became my otp. and well, lore's pretty disturbed by the rose/pearl so far - which is alright, i can definitely see and work with that angle, can definitely find it interesting and whatnot, but... the soppy romantic part of me is like, "NO!" and the fact that this ep liveblog came after he got an ask pointing out that he prioritizes het romance over queer romance and male-female friendship is probably influencing my feelings. like, "he's hella into the het romances, especially steven/connie, but he doesn't feel the queer ones (this far in, anyway) the same way! no! why?!" so yeah... which, well, i've disagreed with lore before. this isn't the first time but.. it matters more to me, i guess...
