    New preview!
The Gem silhouette on the far right looks very much like Lapis. Interestingly, the shape and placement of the Gem-cutouts on the other two blue figures is very similar, and of course they're all blue. Other Lapis Lazulis with different physical forms? Does this mean we'll learn more about Lapis' backstory in this episode?

The Gem silhouette behind Sapphire in this image looks a little bit like Roze Quartz. But if there were already rebel Gems on Earth at this point, the Rose we know and love was presumably among them.

I hope we get to see that tri-Ruby fusion.
Interesting that Garnet specifically refers to Sapphire as a "Homeworld gem". The Rubies were affiliated with Homeworld as well. Maybe Sapphire is actually from Homeworld, while the Rubies are like Amethyst, manufactured on a colony world? Does being from Homeworld confer higher status? Are only high-status types of Gem made there?

oh, it looks like the same gems have similar personalities. So if we do see duplicates of our crystal gems, they may have similar personalities as well.

Or maybe not. Amethyst is overcooked, and Pearl is "defective" so that might influence their personalities more. But I think that does have some implications though, we already know that there is a lot less individuality among gems, but I wonder how far that goes. Are the homeworld gems identical to each other unless they are somehow special? (like the diamonds/rulers or gem society, and on the opposite end of the spectrum "defective" gems. Is it possible that all Peridots look and act exactly like Peridot, that all Jaspers are exactly like Jasper? etc.)

Even with the unique gems, how much of their personality is uniquely them, and how much is hardwired into them? Are their personalities programmed in for the task they were made to do? So soldiers like Amethyst, Ruby, and Jasper are all aggressive and love combat, all Pearls want is to keep things beautiful while having zero concept of self worth or anything beyond serving someone, Peridots control a lot of tech so they are more task/rule oriented and don't let things like feelings compromise their mission. How much of the gems character development is them trying to overcome and develop past the flaws of their predetermined nature?

on a completely different note, if the "flashbacks" with the giant Jasper are any indication, my guess it that because gems are so similar to each other in body and mind, that multiple gems of the same type fusing will just result in a larger physical form. The fusions we see in the show are all unique because it is the combination of different gems/personalities into an actual relationship instead of having an amplifying affect.

My roommate suggested that the big dark red silhouette is actually a fusion of several rubies:

Also I was under the impression that Pearl is only "defective" in that she doesn't act like pearls are meant to act. That would imply that they're all created with similar base personalities and behaviors. And Pearl still has a lot of those tendencies you might expect from someone programmed to be part of a slave caste, though you can tell she's spent a lot of time and effort trying not to and has beaten them back quite a bit.

I think the book confirmed that Gems of the same type fusing will just create a larger and more powerful form for the same Gems. 3 Amethysts fused would just be a very large Amethyst.

    It did indeed confirm that!

    Also:

Apparently Steven and Connie aren't exactly the same age--Connie is a few months shy of thirteen (she says she's twelve and three-quarters, so presumably around three months out), so Steven's a little over a year her senior.

...So how long until Tumblr declares their ship to be Bad And Problematic because there's a miniscule (even at that age, I'd say a year and three months is pretty negligible) age difference?

Also, a few thoughts on The Answer:

I'm actually pretty sure the other Lapis Lazulis have their gems on their chests. Yes, it's done in cutout, but I think that's more an artistic choice. But the general placement is similar.

That itself seems odd, since the other Rubies all have different gem placements...while having functionally-identical physical forms, whereas the other Lapises look wildly different from each other. I wonder if there's any significance there?

But anyway, Lapis' gem seems to be reversed compared to the other Lapises, and I wonder if there's a meaning to that.

Anyway, another thing I've noticed: the differences between Homeworld's caste system and actual gems.

-Real-world pearls are organic; Homeworld Pearls are "made-to-order," possibly even robotic in some way.
-Quartz is super common in real life; on Homeworld, Quartz gems rank very highly.

I dunno where I'm going with this, but yeah.

I'm pretty sure I've seen people call Steven and Connie a problematic ship before, on the premise that adults shouldn't ship underage characters.

Hmm, I don't know if Quartzes necessarily are high ranked? I thought of them more as your heavy hitterw. They're big and strong and tough, which gets some respect, but they don't seem to have tactical roles. Though now I'm wondering what Gems get to be the strategic braniac officers... Sapphirelike types, maybe?

Quartzes are described as "huge, loyal soldiers", which i wouldn't call high ranked. anything programmed for loyalty prolly isn't expected to exert it's own will that much... or maybe they are? eh. dunno. even in a very militaristic society, loyalty is a virtue i'd expect mainly from underlings.

I was assuming they were ranked fairly highly because Jasper seems to outrank Peridot, and Peridot outright states that Amethyst outranks Garnet and Pearl. But then again, Peridots are implied to be low-ranked ("A Peridot with a Pearl?? What would they say back home!"), and Pearls are treated as being barely sentient or worth much at all. And perma-fusions aren't really a thing on Homeworld. So saying Amethyst outranks Garnet and Pearl isn't saying much.

That said, I did assume that Jasper was highly ranked from the get-go, and Rose Quartz (assuming she was actually a Quartz--I'm of two minds re: the Pink Diamond theory, but assuming she was a Quartz) was likely of high status herself, from what we've seen. (She was at least high-status enough to own a Pearl, and Peridot outright comments that Pearl looks like "a fancy one," so that does seem to imply something.) So I'm not sure!

huh. i think i got it into my head somewhere that soldier-types were supposed to be the de facto leaders if you stick them with civvies in any sorta weird and dangerous situation. from tv, maybe. peeps down here do tend to defer to vets and such... i dunno.

and i don't think Jasper could be that highly ranked if she got shunted onto a mission that she'd call "another waste of my time".

like some peeps i've seen have been calling her like a general, but you don't send a general on her lonesome to guard a technician. i think she's strong and she's survived a lot of conflict, and she's afforded a lot of respect for that, but she's still just a soldier-type. high ranked within her lane, which is not overall very high rank. <--- entirely pulled from my ass with no supporting evidence.

    sounds pretty reasoable.
if she is high ranked she is obviously a trouble maker they need to keep occupied with "low priority" missions or they wouldn't have sent just her to accompany peri

  16. Well if she is Pink Diamond, it's possible she chose her name herself and purposely chose something ordinary.

A teardrop shape is a type of cut. It could be a different but similarly-colored gem.

I just watched an episode of a mainstream children's cartoon that was entirely about a romance between two girls and not a Very Special Episode about homosexuality. I love living in the future.
