Yellow Diamond is the Director from Nimona. If the entire archives of Nimona was still online, I'd make a post showing her first appearance to one of her last, but as it is...
Spoiler I guess I'm part of the minority here, but the Peridot / Garnet potential fusion / fusion trial makes me personally uncomfortable. For some reason I can't quite disassociate fusion with being a sexual act, which I guess is what sparks others outrage as well? I'm not sure.
Spoiler: Well Even if you view it as a sexual act, Garnet was asking Peridot's permission every step of the way, backed off immediately when Peridot said no, and reassured Peridot she wasn't mad that they didn't fuse. So I don't see the problem?
Spoiler: Continuing Like, the wording Garnet used - 'you're not ready', 'i'm proud of you', etc, COULD absolutely be manipulative if someone was using them in a manipulative manner, but we know she isn't. Garnet is very gung-ho about fusion being a good thing, but that's understandable given what and who she is, and she's not afraid to point out that it can be representative of a BAD relationship, too, like with Malachite.
GAAAAAH Spoiler IM JUST CATCHING UP NOW AND OLDER STEVEN IS SO DISORIENTATING LIKE FUCK THAT VOICE IS JUST STRANGE AND WRONG WHT THE FUUUCK
Spoiler: X I guess my issue with it all in general is more of a personal experience thing, which makes it difficult to communicate reasons why X makes Y negative association. But I can appreciate where everyone else is coming from in regards to Garnet having patience with it and not being forceful. For me, personally, it is unsettling, regardless of knowing Garnet is a generally good person with good intentions.
Spoiler: X Fair enough! I don't think you're wrong... or at least, your emotions aren't wrong, but they're also not the entire picture.
Spoiler Sooo, Ruby isn't a member of Blue Diamond's court, like how Sapphire is. That's wonked! Who did she belong to? Is the military kinda distinct from the Diamonds? Might be a trucey kinda deal. No individual diamond has troops, to reduce the threat of them splintering off from the GDA whole. But Jasper is a troop and definitely Yellow's... maybe Rubys are mass produced soldiers, and Jaspers are technically not somehow. Bodyguards. Blue had some what looked and sounded like Jaspers to guard her... Thoughts?
Spoiler It's definitly strange now that you mention it! On the other hand it specified that Sapphire was a member of Blue Diamond's court, meaning that maybe technically the rubies were BD's too, but they don't get to wear the diamond because they are't high enough in the hierarchy to be courtiers. maybe it's like an award to get to wear your diamond's sign on your clothes?
Spoiler Maybe individual gems are created specifically for certain Diamonds, but others just kinda free float through the ranks, coming under whomever needs their services. Like Yellow just took a Jasper out of cold storage and handed her a uniform.
Spoiler I think Rubies are weaker soldiers, and fuse to become stronger. Jaspers are stronger (but also fuse to become MORE STRONG) and are probably rarer until the gem war necessitated the diamonds to find a way to bump up their production along with the other types of quartz soldiers that are much bigger and stronger than rubies. Spoiler I am almost positive that the diamonds make whatever gems they need, since Peri was fangirling about how awesome the diamonds are and how awesome it is to serve the diamond you are made for. Gems of a diamonds court are probably much more rare/cannot be mass produced, and have unique abilities (like controlling water or future vision).
Spoiler Probably not jaspers per se, but definitely quartzes. Crysoprases or Heliotropes or Prases or maybe Blue Agates or something. Also it occurs to me that the giant gem we saw rose fighting in the flashback could well have been a two-quartz fusion. Quartzes strike me as shock troops and warriors (not soldiers), maybe battlefield commanders. Rubies and the like are probably the rank-and-file under them. Spoiler or pose too much of a threat to Diamond power in large numbers and thus are only made in small batches and given privileged positions to ensure loyalty. Also, it just occurred to me that if water powers are common to all Lapis Lazuli's, that sky arena would pose a serious, serious threat to the crystal gems in terms of water power. Attacking directly like that took some major chutzpah, and no wonder it was an early target once all-out war began.
Spoiler ooh, that reminds me of my theory about Rose! according to Peridot, quartzes are supposed to be heavy infantry, big tough soldiers. and Jasper (as well as most gems!) wears a jumpsuit, practical for fighting in. Rose Quartz is definitely big and tough, but she's a rare quartz with healing powers! so she was probably a pretty highly ranked gem under Homeworld. which is why she got to wear a big floofy dress (like Sapphire!) instead of the standard jumpsuit. also, why she's a Quartz that has her own Pearl! which might be why the rebellion seems to be so personal for Yellow Diamond-- what if Rose was a member of Pink Diamond's court? so it wasn't just some common gems rabblerousing, but an elite who had been trusted that betrayed the Diamond Authority. dammit, Sugar, the more questions you answer the more questions i have.
I like the idea that Rose is a high up gem, mostly because I think it'd be super hilarious if she were just kinda a rabble rousing trouble maker for the hell of it. Spoiled brat Rose who doesn't really get empathy and the worth of individuals as individuals, but loves defects and novelties as breaks from the monotonous nature of court life. Rose Quartz who's stunned silly by the number of cool and interesting things on Planet Earth and doesn't even bother to think about what the colony will accomplish, she just wants. People mean something to her because they are interesting experiences, and the weird disenfranchised folks she hooks up with are so starved for approval that they take the idea of being worth something specifically for their weird new broken bits and run with it. Of course, none of that has anything to do with canon. I just like it.
While I'm still fond of the Rose Diamond theory, I'm also really growing to love the idea that Rose straight-up fucking murdered Pink Diamond. I'm bad like that. :3
