See, I think this is reasonable... but at the same time when she felt threatened by the Crystal Gems, which she clearly has an extremely negative relationship with, she had no issue with using her ocean powers to defend herself as she tried to flee. She even used them on humans who logically would not be a threat to her, like breaking Greg's leg, and almost drowning Steven and Connie. In both situations she was pretty scared, angry, and desperate to escape. My personal interpretation of her being fearful and shut down on the ship wasn't that she felt helpless against Peridot and Jasper, but against Homeworld. Rebelling would be futile, they'll just get in even more trouble. Since she tried to protect Steven (who from a Homeworld gem's perspective is basically still Rose Quartz, but unknown and different and therefore more threatening because Homeworld does not react well to things that are new and different) she lumped herself in with being allied with the crystal gems and was thrown in jail with them. I think when she returned home, it was instantly suspicious to Homeworld since gems were supposedly "wiped out" from earth. Then, Peridot contacted Steven and The Crystal Gems made their "WE'RE STILL HERE AND ALIVE!!" spiel. Which Peridot takes note of obviously, because she's Peridot and logs everything, and probably reports this to either Yellow Diamond or whatever gems are her supervisors. Now more gems know for sure that the Crystal Gems weren't wiped out. Then Lapis tried to contact Steven. She's already pretty conspicuous, but trying to contact earth afterwards to warn them means that she had contact with someone there. Peridot is already checking in on the Cluster anyways, which will destroy the earth and any gems left on it if everything goes according to plan. However she came in a prison ship, as if they were expecting to capture at least some of whatever high ranking crystal gems were left. Rose Quartz being special priority because she is their leader and there is no reason for them to think she had died. Yellow Diamond mentioned how she assigned Jasper to Peridot. Likely this was done on purpose because Jasper is one of the soldiers left over from the war and knows the terrain and knows the CGs. (who knows how many homeworld soldiers are even alive after the war anyways if it was such a bloodbath?) I do not think she had any prior relationship with Jasper and Peridot. The three of them were brought together by Yellow Diamond specifically to investigate, and she was brought in as "the informant" because she obviously knew more info than anyone else since she just came back from earth and then tried to contact earth again once she was back home. I don't think Jasper or Peridot would even need to interrogate her or abuse her to get the information they needed. If Lapis said no or rebelled against them she would be a traitor to Yellow Diamond, and from what little we've seen of the diamonds, betraying them is an instant death wish. I am not saying Jasper is a cinnamon roll who did nothing wrong either. She is clearly an asshole who doesn't respect people's boundaries, and that is a recipe for abusive behavior, but I don't think we've seen enough of her to make a lot of conclusions about her character or history. SU likes to make it's characters complex and interesting and often times their initial appearances are misleading. I know this isn't a perfect analogy but: if all we saw of Pearl was Rose's Scabbard, or all we saw of Amethyst was Maximum Capacity, they would come off as 110% more dickish and abusive than they actually are. Personally I think they are both pretty toxic and are hurting each other. BUT when it specifically comes to to Malachite, Lapis clearly holds the power in the relationship, is using that to isolate them, is using it to suppress Jasper physically (possibly mentally/emotionally too?), and is keeping them together because she wants to hurt Jasper the way she's been hurt. IMO regardless of any prior history they had, that alone means Lapis is an abuser. Jasper could be the biggest meanest scariest gem on Homeworld who kicks puppies for fun, but she is still being abused here. Being abusive doesn't shield you from being abused.
For the record, cause I know TLDR responses can be intimidating: I am not mad. I just word vomit everywhere when I am talking about something I'm interested in.
Part of my "kick life's ass" playlist is Bird Set Free by Sia and I really need someone to make an SU AMV to this song (I would but I don't know how I'd even acquire the footage/song ;_;). Originally I thought it would be a good song for a Pearl tribute, but after the latest Steven Bomb I think you could do a general AMV with this song too. Also as long as we are talking about Sia songs, we need a SU AMV with all of the fusions to Move Your Body too.

I had to force myself for one sketch per character because she draws the best Amethysts and Jaspers and I probably could have spammed every sketch of them she's ever drawn but... Yes! I don't even care anymore, I need to see Lapis and Jasper again. I need to see how the gems defeat the cluster, I need to see what happens when/if Yellow Diamond sends in another team to see if the earth went boom and it is still intact. I need to have more episodes focusing on the beach city residents. I need to see new fusion combinations. I need to have my theories/interpretations either validated or shot down in flames because THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME.
the last time i was hyped this much for something was the dirk and dave meeting in homestuck. like. come on already, give us the big buff cheeto puff and the water angel again. the waiting is kinda fun though.
AAAAAAAH But on a serious note that isn't just fangirling, people have been asking what characters this applies to (Rose? Lapis? etc.) but I think the beauty of this show is that it revolves around a lot of flawed characters that love each other. It applies to a lot of characters, not one specific one.

The additional versus really make me think of Rose and Greg, or......almost anyone and Steven. Maybe especially Pearl. Although I could see it from Steven to Connie.... OKAY YES THIS. There are a lot of wonderful, strong, (even beautiful) people on Steven Universe, and so many of them could express that sentiment, "What makes you think I'm so special?"
Yeah, I felt like that was one of the more obvious ones. It really cuts both ways for the two of them.
...is there a subtitled version or written down version of the full lyrics anywhere? i'm having a lot of trouble pulling apart all the sounds especially with that consistent buzzing throughout the video and i'd love to know the rest of the lyrics because this is one of my favorite SU songs. my interpretation of the shorter version was always rose singing to the crystal gems, greg, and really anyone who missed her while she was already steven. not literally, like... metaphorically or something.

uh, so the change to wondering if i'm coming back from wondering when i'm coming back is really ominous. other than that i'm totally seeing how this could be lapis and steven. i see the greg and rose too, but this could very easily be pearl and rose if we're talking someone who's way too devoted and rose might feel she used a lot (i'm getting that from "If I could begin to do Something that does right by you" ). that just makes everything a little more dark though which is how i like my rose interpretations but that's a separate matter.
