My oldest cat, Ice, always thinks she wants to go outside and then as soon as she actually gets outside, she realizes it's the worst thing to ever happen to her and starts freaking out. Last week, she escaped while I was bringing groceries in, climbed into the bushes in the front yard and yowled until I crawled in there and rescued her. Later that day, she tried it again but I caught her before she got out the door. Hahaha.

[IMG] She's named Ice because of her blue eyes. Her full name is Princess Ice Blue Sapphire von Icinberg, courtesy of my mom. I call her Ice Blue Sapphire when she's in trouble. Hahaha.

    Another Zee story:
I heard frantic squawking coming from our back porch just now. Apparently a mockingbird of some kind flew in through the torn off lower screen panels--er, DIY doggy doors--and was beating itself senseless against the remaining upper panels. Naturally I run out back to open the door and let it out.

This doesn't work, and it continued to throw itself at the screens. Zee apparently decided this was ridiculous, ambles outside and snatches it out of the air by the tail on its next swoop. Tail feathers come out, so he drops it long enough to pick it up around the middle.

My first thought is "Oh no, oh no, he's moved up from field mice," and then he promptly trots off with his shrieking prize into my library--where he dumps it on my reading table.
I grabbed it before it could fly off around my house and it zipped out of my hands like a slobbery bullet once we got back outside, so apparently it's fine.

    He's very proud of himself.

Just today my family picked up a cat! Poor guy has been living out in a shopping center behind a dumpster, but a friend of a friend of my mom's has been bringing him food. So we met him today and the poor guy is super shy, but he seems to be acclimating a bit - he got out from behind some bins and poked around some, he ate his food, so hopefully he'll settle in soon.

Unfortunately he's probably crawling with parasites and worms, so we'll be going to the vet's office in short order to get him checked out. The guy just can't get a break on car rides.

I went away for a week, and when I came back, boyfriend had made half a dozen balsa-wood airplanes and acquired a terrarium with a red-backed jumping spider. He sort of acquires hobbies if left to his own devices. I'm not sure how long the spider is going to last, and she doesn't have a name yet, but she is super-cute. For now, we're feeding her moths, but we plan to go by the reptile store and pick up some baby crickets as soon as we can.

Started playing Destiny. Zee wants to join me on couch. Flops around on my lap for a bit, won't settle until he reaches behind himself, grabs a pillow and puts it on my knees, under his head. He immediately begins sucking on a (suede!) pillow corner like a pacifier, perfectly comfortable, tail thup thup thupping on the couch.

    ... I think he's a bit spoiled.

We have a female tabby cat named Gracie and a male black cat named Jesse. They're both around sixteen years old. They're both barn cats, but they're in the house a lot too.

Gracie isn't shy, but she doesn't usually like to be touched. Sometimes she does like to be touched, but there's no way to know which one it is this time unless you try. I don't usually try unless she's rubbing against my legs. I let her make contact first. Usually though, she just comes in and eats and leaves again. That's fine. That's how she is.

Jesse is very shy and very skittish. I lived here for months before he would even come near me. He's always out running around in the fields, but he's also skinny and he's always hungry. I used to leave kibble for him under the porch. When the weather got warmer, I started leaving the side door open to get some fresh air and he started coming inside the house to eat. He comes in and noisily chows down at least three times a day, and he's eating upstairs with my brother too. He's probably only thin because he runs constantly.

When Jesse finishes eating, he stands on the other side of the room from me and yowls at me to come pet him. If I'm busy, he will come closer, and I'll stick my hand out, but he won't come within reach, even if he's only an inch from the ends of my fingers. I don't know what that cat's deal is, but I always have to get up to pet him. And I usually do. My brother doesn't, but he says Jesse's been doing that forever and nobody knows why. He's unlikely to stop now.

My mom tells me not to let the cat train me, but I don't mind. Life is short and his life will be much shorter. He’s already sixteen. He won’t be around forever. I don’t mind getting up a few times a day to pet him.

He's extremely affectionate and can't get enough attention, now that he trusts me. During the day, he will sit on the couch for a while, drooling and kneading and purring like an outboard motor while I pet him, and then go back out again for a while. He comes back in in the early evening and spends all evening and night sleeping on the couch beside me, snoring softly. I stay up all night while the whole house is asleep, so it's nice to have company, even if he's asleep too.

This is, in my experience a very typical cat thing. Still not really sure of the reasons behind it, but I haven't known a lot of affectionate cats who don't do that for some reason or another.

Of my kitties, James is more independent but he's much more likely to just get right up in your business when he wants attention. Gordon is super clingy, but he does the stand juuust out of touch range thing. It's usually because he wants my full attention, but not necessarily for cuddles. He has trouble communicating his needs and has exactly one way to convey "I want a thing," bless his silly little heart.

Husband's cat, Lucy, is very much his cat and Queen of the House. I am very rarely worthy of her attention, or of getting attention from her human because how dare I touch him *lazer glare*

That is, until I started to grow my hair out. She adores long hair and has been bereft since husband shaved off his Glorious Wavy Goth Tresses for the military. Now all I have to do is fan my hair out and she'll stop whatever she's doing to hold my head down with her chin (vampire fangs, ow) and knead/comb my hair with her claws while purring and drooling furiously.

You guys, I think I'm going to get a cat in the next few days. A gray tabby kitten I haven't even met yet.

My friend didn't hazard a guess, as she found it climbing out of the undercarriage of a truck at a truck stop.

My landlord has OK'ed it at no extra charge as I have a doctor's order for a companion animal.

So, if all goes well with the hand- over, I shall have a cat. I just need kibble and litter. :)

Allenna I am not a Dragon. Or a Robot. Really.

My Pumpkin adopted me on Halloween back in I think 03. As in I was handing out candy to kids and he ran and hid behind the door and would only let me pick him up. He very quickly became my cuddle bug - even if he does sometimes think he's a big tough outside cat ...that didn't know what to do when he once got out and caught a bird.

My other kitty Matilda (Tilly) was a little raggy feral kitten that decided one cold november that I had food and therefore she liked me. She did not think too highly of me after her bath though. She wasn't cuddly or anything when she was younger, but now she wants affection 24/7, if you have a hand you'd best be petting her.

when i get up most days i sort of do the opposite of make my bed -- i shove all the blankets up against the wall, because i use my bed as an exercise mat for my physical therapy. so there's this hill of blankets, of which hermes is king. customarily, when i need a rest (which is fairly often as i am a mess), i lie on the bed and play tappy games, and hermes sits on the blanket hill and makes squinty love eyes at me and occasionally tries to catch my hand and lick it.

today, though, just for variety, i propped my pillow against the blanket hill and sat up to play my tappy games. hermes came along and was SO OFFENDED. he lay down against the side of the blanket hill, but it was just NOT THE SAME. he allowed me to pet him, but every few minutes he gave this mournful, mooing meow to let me know the situation was sub-optimal.

when i got up, he instantly got on top of the blankie pile, and refused to move even when seebs was fixing my bottom sheet, thus dragging the whole blanket pile around.

It's a nice day and I was sitting on the porch texting someone and Jesse comes charging past at top speed and flies in through the open door. That cat was airborne. I heard him yowling inside and I'm texting but he starts sounding really forlorn so I go inside to see what he's doing, and he's just standing there. I pet him briefly and go back outside, expecting him to follow. But he starts yowling again, and I call him and stand outside the door and he stands inside the door, meowing, and refuses to come through. So I go inside and sit down in my usual spot on the couch and he mills around for a bit and then hops up and sits in his usual spot on the couch and starts purring and I pet him for a while. And then he jumps down and goes and eats and then goes back outside.

I don't know why he insisted I pet him inside and not outside, he's outside all the time and it's not hot, it's less than 20C. Weird cat.
