Super General Advice (the thread for advice without making a thread)

  1. Oh hey I didn't get the notifications for this thread. So- I am using the antidepressants for depression. I feel like I need to increase the dosage but my mom is vehemently opposed to it, because two family members are already on Higher Dosage of This Medication and are... very depressed. And she doesn't want me to suffer from suicidal thoughts as a result. And she says I'll get used to taking them anyway and they'll stop helping as much. So. Fuck her I'm gonna try to go off them. But I need a solid plan in place.

I’m pretty sure the first step in that plan should be talking to your doctor if you haven’t already

Also different people can respond totally differently to medication, even if you're related.

  4. I went to the doctor yesterday and barely even had a conversation. I didn't bring it up because I *wanted* to ask her to up my dose but couldn't.

Please do not go off your meds without talking to your doctor about it.

If you up the dosage and it doesn't work, you can always try a different med. I had to try 4 before I found the one that works for me.

Yeah, I was sick for a month after I went off my old meds. Definitely something you'd wanna ask your doctor or Psychiatrist about.

Also, if it's an SSRI, it's worth talking to your doctor about trying a different type of medication.

Because they have different mechanisms of action. SSRIs, as the name implies, selectively inhibit reuptake of serotonin specifically. SNRIs, by contrast, inhibit reuptake of serotonin and other neurotransmitters as well, so if your depression is not related to serotonin levels, an SNRI may work better. There are other classes too, from what I understand, but I'm most familiar with SS-/SNRIs.

  9. Lambda

    Lambda everything happens so much

If I join a probably all-ages fandom group, is it okay to link to my ao3 if there's explicit fics on there? as long as I said something along the lines of 'hey, head's up there's some nsfw stuff in there' and didn't talk about them specifically

would that be enough, I do want to share around the ones that aren't explicit

@tickingnectarine, what Saro said. I'm on an NDRI because my mom has a really bad history with SSRIs and it didn't seem worth chancing it (like, hospitalized within the first week bad).

@Lambda, that sounds perfectly reasonable? As long as stuff is tagged appropriately on the fics themselves, you're not responsible for curating anyone else's content.

@tickingnectarine Yeah, I switched from SSRI to an SNRI and it was like night and day.

What are you supposed to do when something you really like inexplicably also just makes you feel sorrowful
Even when nothing bad is happening in it or surrounding it
Like say, you're watching a really good, sweet and funny clip of something you enjoy but then it just makes you
    Really sad

  13. Lambda

    Lambda everything happens so much

I got a big flashy red spammy error screen in Firefox that tried to get me to call a phone number, much bigger scam than I'm used to
ran avast and reset firefox, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what else to do, since I'm not good with computers

sorry, I know this is dumb, but a big red screen with looping audio that I had to shut down in task manager: kind of stressful

Might be worth running Malwarebytes, too. It's better at catching bad stuff that isn't actually a virus than most antivirus software is, and there's a free version.

....but isn't it bad to have two contradicting programs like that
like multiple blue screens occurrences bad (a thing that has happened to me, due to being bad at computers)

Nah, Malwarebytes isn't a full antivirus. The free version doesn't even have active monitoring.

@Lambda worth noting that the free version does now automatically activate the premium trial. you'll want to go to the malwarebites settings and disable that after installing, to avoid any active monitoring shenanigans. however i do strongly recommend running it!

here's the option to disable the premium trial (this will still leave you with a fully functioning scanner, it just won't automatically monitor and/or run, only running when you tell it to):

the option to disable premium should be found under this tab (I don't have it because I already disabled it)

if that doesn't fix the problem, i would check your firefox addons/extensions. make sure there aren't any that you don't recognize.
