I'm trying to do voice claims for my OCs, and it's hard to find one for a six-year-old character. Since she has a pretty horrible backstory it's probably best I don't associate an actual child with her, even if that child actor is grown up now, but it's really hard finding adult women voicing British kid characters. Anyone got any suggestions?

I’d like to help but I’m unsure what exactly a voice claim is, and what you need it to do. Is it something you need to be able to imagine, or something you need to be able to show other people? Also exactly what type of British accent are you looking for? Is Scottish fair game? Northern England? Upper class? Blue collar?

    I found one:

She probably doesn’t sound six, but she does sound like a child.

The actress, Susan Sheridan, was born in ‘47. I found her through a list of UK children’s shows, because she played a Scottish girl in a show called The Family-Ness and from there I checked her filmography and saw she was in The Black Cauldron.

That’s pretty much the best advice I have if you need to hear the actor doing a specific accent. Look for people who may have played in British cartoons and then browse their filmography. I don’t know of a good way to specifically find young British girl voice acting, but the necessary versatility of many professional voice actors does help. They may have done *something* in the right accent.

(Edit to make a sentence actually make sense.)

Voice claim = same as a face claim. I want to have a character or person I can point to to say "this is roughly how I imagine the character's voice to sound".

If I get a new phone should I stay with apple or switch to something else. My parents and gf have Samsungs and I fucking hate the interface and the back button annoys the fuck outta me but they’re possibly sturdier and at least easier to repair

Androids are easier to change the interface on than iPhones, iirc. I've got a custom launcher, dialer, and text messaging app myself.

Aren't pixels hells of expensive? idk if we could afford that even with Contract Stuff

Also. If I took the sim card out of my iphone and put it in my ipad would that....work...and what would happen? it would just transfer the number and stuff, right? Would there be a way to perform dark apple arts and switch out the memory and shit or would that be playing with fire

if your phone is backed up to the cloud, you can restore your ipad from the backup and get all your phone stuff on there. the sim card just stores the phone number, iirc, i don't think it stores any data beyond that.

ime most phones are pretty equally fragile these days, and they all require tools that most people don't have in their homes... even the ones that use phillips or torx screws use REALLY TEENY ones. but you can get screwdrivers and stuff on amazon pretty cheap. if you want to look into home repair, ifixit.com is the best source i know! they have tons of stuff on there with step-by-step picture instructions, so if you have a phone in mind that you're interested in, you can get a feel for if it looks like something you could work on yourself.

... oh wow, so i actually went and looked at ifixit's breakdown on the two Samsung phones that came out in 2018 (the S9 and Note 9) and the two iPhones that came out in 2018 (the XS and XR, god Apple what is up with your names right now) just to see how bad things are, and... they rated both Samsungs a 4/10, while both iPhones got 6/10. O_o i'm genuinely shocked, i guess once you get past the proprietary screws the iPhone's not that bad.

(honestly if it were me i'd just go with the interface i like best and get a good protective case, but also interface is a massive deal-breaker with devices for me so ymmv on that.)

Also thank you I... genuinely hate androids interface I know where everything is on an iPhone and it’s easy to find settings and it’s not a disordered chaos of apps and widgets..... I only wish it was easier to move apps between pages

oh, yeah, i'm not sure if it's even possible to switch ram from a phone to an ipad. afaik the ram is soldered to the logic board in most devices. and the ipad uses a very different form factor for its internals than the iphone anyway.

(source: i'm the type of person who reads teardowns for fun.)

edit: i just realized you probably meant storage, not ram. in which case, yeah that is definitely soldered to the logic board and not swappable between such differently sized devices.

(Srry if I am spamming this thread too much maybe we should just make a general tech advice thread as well?)
Actually, Samsung n such users, how easy is it to get your phone repaired? How much does it cost, usually?

A THING I JUST REMEMBERED AFTER MY FLIGHT TODAY. Try to get to the airport at least like an hour or so before boarding (boarding, not take-off) time. Even when airports are not Busy, they're still pretty damn busy.

pixels are generally comparable to similar models of iphones in price, the main attraction for me was that pixels use the default android interface. most companies customize it heavily/ add there own apps. it depends on the model you get, as with apple phones. pixel interfaces are closer to apple ones than most android phones. i think its possible to get other phones running stock android, but i haven't explored it too heavily.

I actually really dislike Samsung, but I'm definitely an android user.

It's seems like LG has a bad rep? But I've only had one problem with their phones, and from what I can tell, they fixed that, so shrug. I'm a creature of habit and so I try to stay with LG. I had a Samsung for a hot second and I couldn't stand it. Plus I can take butter true-to-color pictures of the sky on my LG :P

I also hate Apple though, because I have trouble finding things. So ymmv

But yeah, different companies have different native apps and slightly different interfaces.

I recommend going to a store and playing with the phones. Just to see how difficult it is to find things you usually need, play with display settings a little, etc. Even talking to the people there could be helpful. Yes, they are trying to sell you something, but they're usually knowledgeable, so if you tell them what you want in a phone, they might be able to direct you.

Oh also also, at least with older phones, you could expand the memory with the micro SD cards like they use in cameras. I just looked at my phone, though, and I don't see the slot anymore

Some androids still have the expandable memory feature - the galaxy line does and so do a couple LG phones. I personally don't use it because I don't download videos and most of my photos are cloud stored, but if you download a lot of videos or take a lot of HQ photos it's a useful feature. I mostly used mine to put my enormous comic scan library on when I had it.

I agree with @Re Allyssa, go to a store and check out phones there. The reason most companies use android in their phones instead of making their own operating systems is that android allows the companies to customize nearly every facet of the phone's operating system to their liking. Nearly every manufacturer customizes it heavily. There is a way to add just plain android to phones, but i don't know how it works. While i was looking for it, I found this though, which might be helpful.

keltena putting the fun in executive dysfunction

Does anyone know if there's an a) Firefox extension, or b) Android app that will let me block most websites, but also allow me to override the block on individual pages without disabling it entirely or permanently whitelisting that domain? I've been looking into productivity tools like Leechblock to combat my executive dysfunction (I get distracted and sidetracked incredibly easily while doing work on the computer/phone), but they're generally more geared towards people trying to forcibly reduce their internet/social media use, so they don't tend to include an easily-usable override option. I mostly need the loud "nope, you're not doing that right now" reminder every time I get sidetracked, not the extreme enforcement measures, and since a lot of tasks I do on my computer/phone involve google searches where I can't possibly know what sites I'll need to visit in advance, the tools I've found so far are basically unusable for me.

Ideally what I'd want is to have some kind of "show this page anyway" option every time a page is blocked, so I can stop, assess, and then click through if it's actually what I meant to be doing. (I'm fine with jumping through minor hoops like entering a password or agreeing that yes I'm REALLY sure I want to, as long as I don't have to disable the block or add each site I want to view to my whitelist.) I'd also be willing to do this for all sites instead of all-but-whitelisted sites if that's my only option, but I'd rather not. Is there a way to do that, either with the kinds of productivity tools I've been looking at or by some other method?
