Oh, I saw that! I think my favorite part was Because pffft, I'm an English major, and like hell am I putting every casual fic I write in MLA format. Seeing paragraph indentations in an online writing setting actually strikes me as odd - something about the formality of it reminds me of schoolwork and so makes it harder for me to focus on the fic itself. But seriously, of all the random things to complain about on AO3...
i mean... textwalls are just awful to read. but paragraph indentation...? i think about 97% of all fics wouldve needed to be deleted if paragraph indentation were a measure of worth. (also, fuck that person, whoever they are)
I looked that thing up and. WTF? What is this persons problem with AUs. If they don´t like them, don´t read them. That´s what the tags are for. Fucking fight me. This is fanfiction not professional writing. The point of fanfic is to have fun. Once again, if you don´t like it, don´t read it. Also I will fight you about self inserts. Once again, fanfic = for FUN. That means sometimes it is pure self indulgence, and that´s ok. No one is making you read, or asking you to pay for reading it. If you look in the tags you aren´t even wasting time reading it, because you can just skip the damn fic. (Can you tell I hate it when people go "Dont you dare publish fic that is below my standards" because way to make people too intimidated to write and turn writing into a chore.)
also, writing for fun stuff with AUs and self-inserts and OCs is still writing and it's how many get started, and get better. but boohoo, someone wrote a thing not specifically catering to my whims. how my heart bleeds. ... wait, no, that's just fluid leakage from the rotting process, nevermind.
and this person hasn't posted any actual fics themself silly or terrible writing is better than none at all
But see, that's the thing. Text walls tend to happen when people don't have some indication of a break between the paragraphs. So you can solve that by either indenting the paragraph or having a line break - they essentially serve the same purpose (though the link is a little prescriptivist). I've noticed that physical books standardized indentation (perhaps because it saves space and paper) while current online fanfiction leans toward line breaks. You can have both for fanfiction, but...it's pretty much redundant at that point, unless you're working with something like concrete poetry where the visuals and typography are a deliberate part of the creative work as a whole /shuts myself up before I get in too deep And yeah, the rest of this person's complaints are about stuff that happens in EVERY fandom that has ever produced fanfiction, ever. People like tropes and weird aus and self insert stuff and that's fine! If you're not interested, don't read it. I'm leaning towards 'this guy's a troll' :T
let's hope, and keep on writing self-indulgent stuff in the meantime ::D and i'm an eternal linebreaks kid. paragraph indentation just looks wrong, especially when not coupled with a linebreak beforehand. doesn't break up the textwalls at all D:: (for the longest time, i didnt even like paragraph spacing - damn it, if i wanted the phrase to start in a new line but it still belonged to the previous line of thought, paragraph spacing had no business of being there, augh. i've only recently reconciled with the idea, although double linebreaks are still quicker)
they have, under a different pseud. (it's hypermasculine beefy muscle porn) (they didn't even TRY to be xeno >:[)
I will fight anyone who wants to take my oc fics and self inserts away how fucking dare THOSE FICS ARE LIKE DELICIOUS POTATO CHIPS
I would hope that would mean like. silly flexing and shooting people while making out (though I think I've actually read something like that before), but it's probably bland as hell but that does make me slightly less irked at them. yes, go write your terrible porn instead of pouting, and let everyone else write theirs
honestly i can't stand self-insert or reader/character fics but HEYO that's what ao3 savior is for!! it's easy, it's free, it could have saved OP from being a huge asshole to people for the crime of liking a thing that OP did not like what a whiny entitled self-important soggy paper towel roll :/
from the brief look that i took it was more like 'OP spanks the rebelliousness out of wheeljack, who flexes his Huge Muscles manfully, and takes OP's Huge Cock'
you'd think it'd be Magnus/Wheeljack instead, unless it's not TFP at all, which would be...interesting. idw wheeljack, building muscles for himself just so he can flex them
I can't imagine any of the robots spanking each other, but then again, that's not on of my kinks. I was just about to suggest that we were all being trolled by Andrew Hussie. Arquiusprite would be down for OC/Self Insert fics. He'd get a bee up his carefully chiseled ass about l0wd language. oh my GOD WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT. BWAHAAAHAH!
