All we know is that the baby sparks absorb the surrounding sentio metallico to make their bodies in whatever shape. If you decide to harvest them, my impression was that you need a certain amount of that material to keep them viable, though I guess less than it would take to make a whole new body (though this is just muy best guess from very little source material). Given that one flashback, it seems like the cold constructed bots also need to be built using sentio metallico, or the sparks get rejected or something. Though now that I think of it, it's really interesting that they make a big point of how you NEEED these particular native minerals to make babies, but the colonies have been successfully reproducing for ages. Give me more worldbuilding! More! I demand it!

And also, FUNNY QUIRK OF THE FRANCHISE: so in most iterations of transformers, Arcee tends to be blood-colored. In most continuities, dating back to the eighties cartoon, she is violently pink. Energon also tends to be pink. Arcee being blue is not the usual, but it just happened to be the case in the big animated series where they made the unusual decision to make energon blue too.
