A bit like the alethiometer in the Golden Compass trilogy, I'd guess? Apart from that, I have no idea. They just... do.

There is truth in chaos, if you can learn to separate it from the noise

Though some spreads are, or can be, associated with particular entities, and in that case the entity will influence the outcome of the reading

I did half a dozen spreads trying to figure something out, and this is what I've figured so far:

    Being in question is female.
She heavily dislikes food offerings, and seems not-so-keen on stuff like candles, incense, essential oils, papercrafts, or baubles, but to a much lesser extent than the food. Or at least she would dislike the fruit&cheese curd smoothie I would've offered.
She is benevolent, but does have a warrior side to her; Love/Justice/Battle comes up a lot, espc in that order. She loves, and she will get her due, and she will fight for it - but gives ample reward in return.
Almost no mentions of a creative influence. A certain element of waiting, and an upset balance. We are trying to figure each other out, or, rather, I'm trying and failing to figure her out. Possibly, she wants the 'debt' to go unpaid for now, and she will soon (?) have a favour to ask in return. Earlier readings suggest a freely-given gift instead. The wish to be remembered.
    Upheaval, both past and present.

    Hm.

    ...
I think I just got not only a very resounding "no", but also a "don't you fucking dare"
(7 card spread, 1-3 the past, 4 present/motivation, 5-7 future: Emperor, Reversed 10 of Swords, 10 of Coins, Reversed Magician, Tower, Reversed 3 of Cups, Knave of Staffs; i think that means "I'm trying to be patient and understanding, but it's suffering, and if you give me that I'm going to blindside you in retaliation", aaaand i'm not gonna risk that)

i dont think she likes food/drink offerings.

That was more of a joke than a suggestion of a question to ask. Because I am fucking lost when things don't want food or drink. It's just so integral to interacting with the Fair Folk that I'm left holding a saucer of milk and going "What do?"

Hm. From the spread, definitely less animosity this time. Travel, and something of value. Good thing I'm going out tomorrow, I'll see if I can find something?
(same spread as previous; Queen of Cups, Reversed 9 of Staves, 10 of Staves, Reversed 5 of Staves, Knight of Staves, Reversed Empress)

Lots and lots of Staves. My manual refers to them as active, both weapon and tool.

    Oh. ooooh.
    I've got an idea.

Sorry for the double post. I'm having trouble reading this, but my guess is "nope."
urgh, i give up for today, maybe things will be clearer tomorrow.
(same spread as previous; Reversed 4 of Staves, Reversed Knave of Staves, Reversed World, Reversed 4 of Swords, Reversed Queen of Cups, Death, 8 of Coins)

She sounds pretty awesome! I hope you find something.

Is it possible for a person to just repel all mystical things or was I doing it wrong? I used to believe in them really strongly as a child and don't now because they never worked.

I would giuess an entity that gets... Hm not repaid but that you honor in actions. In how you live your life. Where an act she would approve of in her domain can be done in her name, honoring her by emulating her and her will.

@Raire I don't know a lot about this, but if the Staves represent action and they're coming up a lot, and physical items aren't getting a yes, I'd think that's a fairly sound guess.

It's very possible! @seebs is a known antimagic human and I'm a natural ghost repellant, I almost NEVER got bothered by anything except my ghost cat (who is used to me, for obvious reasons, as she is not a ghost cat who wandered in but My Cat, Who Is Now A Ghost).

I'm curious, can anyone do a long-distance read on me and see if that is what's happening?

Question asked: "Why do mystical things not work for ChelG?"
    Answer: The Tower
    Support: The Moon, inverted
    Support: Death

    My interpretation:
You were not always magic-resistant, something happened to separate you from the mystical

Agreed with that interp. The tower specifically implies a wrecking of something to me, and Death + overturned moon kind of lean to "the way you survived was transforming and jettisoning your Moon/intuition/dreams/magic-ness."

    bro

so like, months ago, I brought a fluorite to school cause my friends said it was her favourite stone, and I brought it back home and left it on my nightstand cause I was too lazy to put it away properly
sometimes when i was really blanking head wise and just really numb mentally I would just kinda hold it and it would calm me, or I would look at it and it was kinda calming
I'd also press it against my face and it would cool me down, specifically my forehead
    guh
    wow

On the 'gods and spirits' side of things, I figure that they can play with, yeah, the more-or-less random stuff like how cards get shuffled, what cards pop out of the deck, etc.

Alternately, I think that the imagery and densely layered symbolism of, say, tarot illustrations or the multiplicity of Oghams associated with a given letter, etc, make me engage the storytelling, meaning-making, and pattern-matching parts of my brain. Which gives the 'front' of my head enough to focus on that it leaves the 'back' (ie, the intuition, the unconscious, the senses-invisible-stuff, etc.) of my head alone to flex its wings and give the rest of me the input/answers/interpretation.
If I'm not explicitly looking to talk to the Kindred or tap into the psychic intuition of a friend, I like to think of tarot (and other divination, by extension) as a good tool to go, 'here's a bunch of symbols, HUMAN BITCHES LOVE SYMBOLS, RIGHT??', and that helps me get an alternate interpretation or perspective on the issue.

I've also heard from a couple different people that they sometimes interact with the germanic runes as like, little embodied spirits or helpers in their own right. Whether that's because they are, or because repeated attention/energy/input has built them up into a potent collection of egregores, I'm not sure matters. It's an awesome idea.

I suspect part of the reason this stuff doesn't really work for me is because I read too much creepypasta and I'm freaked out by the possibility of spirits so I'm too scared to let it work. Am I to assume that if one does get a bad one they generally aren't bad enough to require standing on the staircase for thirteen hours to get rid of them?

That seems an extreme scenario, if it's possible at all. Not something you'd normally need to worry about, and definitely not if you don't actually go around poking dangerous things
