so um i've been reading this thread for a while and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about doing a sort of cleanse for apartments? i'd really like to ward my new apartment when i move in but i also don't know if that's something that i Shouldn't Do b/c i'm only renting the space.

the other things i'm currently interested in are making charms and maybe charged jewelry for luck/soothing anxiety/etc and tarot, but i'm not sure where to start exactly. i currently have an idea for making a good luck charm but i'm not sure how to go about charging it. is just thinking about your intentions when making the charm enough, or does it depend on the witch? i'm really new to this whole thing despite being interested in Witchy Stuff for several months now.

My suggestion as always are a saining. Either with water you've consecrated or with smoke. Get the whole room done. Also sain in a sunwise orientation if you can. Just go in a circle around it. Make sure to get the doors, windows, and air vents. Next thing is to set aside something for the house spirit. Some sort of beverage or food item tends to be a good bet with them. Like give them a cup of coffee or something you know? Stay on good terms with them while you're there, occasionally giving them offerings to keep them peaceful and happy.

Also good luck charms really depend upon tradition? Like I've got a few Bríghid's crosses that I made around Imbolc that I've got set up. They ward off fires and invaders. You put them at the front door and over the stove. Additionally I have some scraps of cloth I've had Bríghid bless on Imbolc too. That's specifically for good luck in things like childbirth and the like so they're being kept around. Things shaped like wheels are really good bets for me because of the whole Buddhism thing. I draw the things everywhere. There's nothing that really goes into that save drawing the figure and chanting over it. Or getting the wheel shaped object or Buddha image and chanting over it.

Generally though in my experience good luck charms are made that way either through chanting or through the auspices of a god or spirit. The chanting you can do yourself. It works via transference of merit by speaking the Dhamma. Or, away from Buddhism in particular, through speaking something so incredibly true that the object is blessed by that truth of word. The blessing thing meanwhile you ask them about it, give them nice offerings and hand over the object itself. Then you wait for a day or so. Maybe do some divination to see how things worked. Depending on things specific days may be best for doing this, as with Imbolc and Bríghid based blessings.

how do you consecrate water, usually? i unfortunately can't collect rainwater since i don't have a balcony and i'd feel rude putting a bucket or something on the walkway outside my apartment (i'll be living in a studio that doesn't have any indoor hallways).

as for tradition, i'm not sure i have one! to my knowledge, my parents haven't ever done anything witchy in their lives, so i'm sort of figuring this out as i go along. so far, i think chaos magic seems like the closest thing to what i'm doing, but i still don't know much about it yet, nor do i know if it's okay for me to practice it.

    thanks for the info! :>

Chaos magic from what I know is an open tradition. And that's part of like its thing? Though to be fair I don't know much about it due to it not being my thing at all. I'm a Gaelic reconstructionist polytheist and a Theravadan Buddhist so yeah.

Anyway...If you can't collect rain water I suppose you could set aside bottled water or tap water? Like if it's all you've got available then it's what you've got. As far as how to consecrate it...Again that depends a lot, but I personally tend to burn some candles and some incense and pray as I'm setting it aside for ritual purposes. Though with the Buddhist stuff I chant over that instead of praying. Chanting is just our go to solution to things like this.

i think candles are usually good, but i'd have to look at my lease or ask my landlord what their policy on candles is, since i'm not 100% sure if that's advisable in an apartment that doesn't have windows (and i don't think it does? there could be a kitchen window but i don't remember seeing one).

i could also probably get bottled waters on occasion for ritualistic purposes, or set aside water from my pitcher (i have a water pitcher for purifying tap water since the water in my state in certain areas is not...super nice).

...then again it's raining right now and i could maybe get away with putting a plastic bottle in some bushes to collect rain water. there are probably bushes and stuff around my new apartment too. not sure if that's too much of a jerk move though.

Could get some electric candles? Also so long as you remember to pick up the bottle I don't think it'd be that bad of a thing to collect some water in one? I mean the jerk move would be it being in someone's way or leaving it there. But you're doing neither in that case.

i was thinking of doing that but wasn't sure if that would be useful in this case too. as for rain water, yeah i'm. probably going to go out there and see if i can find somewhere good to put this bottle.

My opinion of electric candles and the like is if you've got to make do then you make do. Like yes rowan and what not were all used by the Gaels, but part of why is because they readily had access to those tools. Hell, Manannán asks for rushes to pay rent specifically because they are easy to find and aren't that big of a burden on the people who pay it. He doesn't ask for much. And that's fine. That's part of the point.

So unless you're getting a clear sign that a god or a spirit is absolutely fucking furious at you for using plastic or something I say that shit's fair game.

Also this reminds me of a dumb and weird fact I know about Thai house spirits. For whatever reason they really love Fanta. Especially orange Fanta. Orange Fanta is one of the most popular offerings to give them. Soda in general, but that particular sort specifically. Which is just great. I love when little dumb things like that happen.

that's awesome??? i might just print out the Lisa Frank tarot deck and ask what the heck they want once i get there, since i have 0 ideas.

also: rain is Amazing and tomorrow i will go see if my bottle is still standing. if it's not i might consider getting a glass bottle.
