It has seemed to me for several years that thinking about firearms in the US is being fucked by some seriously bad magical thinking on both "sides". There are some that believe firearms are the very Torch of Liberty and that by their very presence in the home and in the nation, True Patriots will Preserve their Lives and their Liberty and their Sacred Honor. There are some who believe firearms are the very Tool of the Dark One and that their very presence in the home and in the nation will bring Death and Horror. Both these magical opinions are serious bullshit.
Part of the problem is how people are reading the wording of the legislation. "a good reason" sounds like "justify your need!" but in practice is used closer to "an approved use".
Oh yeah, I do live in a fairly urban area but there are not-infrequent reports of cougars roaming around
Uh...I have...never seen this happen? Do you mean people keeping handguns in holsters at their side? How "thugs" will keep guns in their waistbands? What's your angle?
Aren't you saying I shouldn't be allowed to have the gun in the first place if I live in an urban area?
Well, yeah, that was what I've been saying. I do like that you have to have two referees to reduce the chance of people just lying their way past the licence dispensary. Prevents lone gunmen.
OH MY GOD FUCK COUGARS there was one chilling around my college and the school was like "uh...well this is the fourth spotting of it........we can't really do shit cuz we can't find it when we're looking just walk in groups ok dont die thanks"
No? But I was talking about when people are? People can carry hunting rifles in public in cases, sure, that's how you transport them to where you're doing your hunting. I think you guys are seriously extrapolating on what I'm actually saying here.
Please explain in layman's terms what you're trying to get across, in the most impartial way you can manage. So far you've been talking from a UK experience, coupled with a media exposure. You aren't making a great case to people who are living in the country that actually has these gun law problems/
Literally all I've been saying is "The US should adopt gun control laws equivalent to those already implemented in the UK". Because we've been field-testing ours for a while, and they seem to work perfectly fine?
A good portion of those people have trigger locks (not just the safety but a locking mechanism that covers the trigger and guard entirely) on their guns while in transport, and if, for example they're going to bring those guns anywhere around people IE into a store to get serviced, they will be required to check the gun at customer service or apply a lock loaned by the store.
