SO HEY MURRICANS WHADDA Y'ALL EAT FOR TANKSGIBBINS?? Here's my family's menu: Stuffing Gravy Mashed potatoes Green beans almandine Roasted brussels sprouts Cranberry sauce, both jellied and whole-berry Rolls Field Roast (it's a veggie meat substitute thing, p dang tasty imo) Pumpkin pie No turkey 'cause my folks are vegetarians, but honestly I don't mind that. Turkey's overrated, IMO.
turkey legs are the least disappointing part of the bird and I love them and would probably fight someone for them if I had to my folks did Thanksgiving in October before it was cool but it was basically the same as yours, except with corn and peas instead of green beans and brussels sprouts (there's like one person who enjoys brussels sprouts and they dgaf this time around). my grandma likes to make Festive Jello for the winter holiday meals, this is red flavor jello and green flavor jello sort of layered in the same bowl to look vaguely fancy. one time they had to use grape instead of red flavor and it was even better. I can't remember when or where I had this, but someone once made cake jello, which was cut-up homemade white cake with strawberry jello poured over it and chilled. it had an interesting texture. also every time I get a roll with turkey dinner I make a miniature turkey-dinner sandwich with it and this is somehow more Satisfying than just eating the bread alongside everything else
I'm out of town with my in-laws right now so we went out to eat - my family traditionally does Thanksgiving the Saturday or Sunday after the actual day, since our family is full of divorce and it's easier that way. We normally have: - ham - deep fried turkey (only way it's good imo) - sometimes roast beef - baked macaroni - mashed potatoes - some kind of corn dish - stuffing - green beans - apple cranberry crunch (this is my grandma's thanksgiving sort of dessert sort of side crumble thing - it is not thanksgiving without it imo) - some other kind of vegetable (squash, broccoli, carrots - depends on the year) - cranberry sauce - gravy - pumpkin pie - pecan pie It's normally my grandparents, my mom, my uncle, my two cousins, me, and my sister, plus any assorted tagalongs we want to bring (significant others, friends, etc.) so that's why all the dishes. Normally everybody brings at least one thing - macaroni is always me and I'm also bringing potatoes this year. My grandparents always provide turkey and beer and cider, and after dinner we sit around playing Balderdash or Pictionary or Mille Bornes or, lately, Cards Against Humanity.
- turkey - mash tato - gravy - sweet potato casserole - asparagus - brussels sprouts - biscuits -cranberry sauce - stuffing - pumpkin pie - pecan pie but that's at my parent's house, and i'm not actually sure if i'm doing anything this year ): (was supposed to visit uncle, but his sons have stomach flu)
I missed the thanksgiving today cause i woke up sick, but our usuals are: Pecan pie Pupmkin pie Deviled eggs Ham Smoked turkey (unless someone other than the usual person does it) Sweet potatoes, the kind with marshmallows on top Grean bean casserole Dressing (one regular pan and one jalapeno pan) Fruit cake that actually tastes friggin delicious instead of nasty* Extras that made it this year that i was told about: Really great mac n cheese Cornbread casserole * My great aunt always made the fruit cake and this is our first year without her, so there wasn't any cause no one got the recipe as far as i know. Im real bummed because thats the second amazing recipe lost to a lost family member
my family's menu is: stuffing gravy cornbread muffins and jam brussels sprouts this pilaf orzo thing which is amazing some type of chicken? pumpkin pie possibly salad
Favourite food group: MEAT ALL THE MEAT. Not a huge fan of steak, but I love pretty much everything else :D Also sugar (cakes, and muffins and such specifically) and junk food. I love me some junkfood and really wish I was one of those people who could eat anything they wanted while staying the same dress size.
good-quality bread (freshly toasted) + leftover cheese sauce (homemade) = hhhhhnngg how do I stop eating this I mean I guess I'll have to stop when I run out. BUT STILL
My fried rice looked so pretty I had to take a picture, especially as I went the higher spoons route when making it.
Tonight's dinner: chicken, potatoes, and a wine-apple-cream sauce that is fucking addictive and had me and boyfriend practically licking the pan. Too lazy to do the fix orientation trick...
I'll try to remember to ask my parents if they have any idea of something more precise than "cut up ingredients, cook them (caramelize the onions, I think?), mix them together along with the spices (I think we tried adding cream once, don't remember how that went), make it into a pie (a bit better with a flaky dough, IMO) and bake it". You are definitely allowed to remind me to do that. :P The pie itself is a huge mess to eat but tastes really good.
okay. good. ....but if you REALLY can't sleep still in like. half an hour. you can return to being online. I will accept that.
@Starcrossedsky Small correction: there's also a bit of cream. You do need to caramelize the onions. Also, the chicken must be cut into thin strips. The way we make the shell, it's closed with a vent hole at the center. Flaky dough is better. Brush the crust with egg yolk and put it in the oven until it's golden. Apparently, you need to put the oven's temperature to 400F, and lower it to 350 once you put the pie in. I'm sure lots of this is unnecessary but my mother insisted I mention them.
