Question to the fanfic reading masses: how often do you read fic that's for pairings you don't ship and what makes you do so? Context: got a comment on a shippy oneshot and it made me curious
Personally, I don't usually seek it out, but if I find a premise sufficiently intriguing or am recced something I'll read stuff for most ships, even ones I don't actively ship myself. (About the only exceptions are outright NOTPs, and I don't have many of those, so...)
I'm willing to give nearly any pairing a shot so long as the fic's decently long and has an interesting premise ngl. I'm picky quality-wise, but not really shipwise.
Honestly I read fic more for the tropes than the ship? It's way more common for me to browse character tags than ship tags, filtering out the ones I know from experience I'm not gonna enjoy and any additional Things I've Tried Which I've Determined I Do Not Like. Recommending me fics that do dynamics well is a good way to get me into things, be they ships, characters, AUs, or wholeass fandoms.
It's fandom dependent for me? Some stuff I come out of only wanting more A/B, a lot of stuff I come out of happy to read basically anything in a fandom, ships or no ships, as long as it's well done. Transformers and Mob Psycho 100 are the latter, Inception is the former. If the world and full cast is interesting enough, I'm less likely to go ships only when searching. Then I want to see what people are doing with any and every tool at their disposal.

Following on from discussions elsewhere it probably says a lot about the state of The Discourse that my literal nicest character would probably be dismissed as Problematic. Like, Tes is a bastard woman but would probably get a pass on a lot because she's female and everyone (me included) is thirsty for the big ladies. She s not above casual murder and hates everyone but even I have to fight the temptation to make her softer. Dynas has the audacity to be an older dude with an alcohol problem. He's a genuinely kind person but oh no he banged a 25 year old he is Cancelled.
It's probably unfair on the world to get mad about discourse that doesn't exist but concerns like these are part of why I haven't started writing the thing Dynas is from; I'm worried about how he'd be perceived especially because the plot involves him adopting a child. Like... yeah he's not an ideal role model or father figure but he's trying

More bad OC takes Tes would get the Jasper treatment where she would be treated as either an irredeemable monster who's incapable of having anything approaching a healthy relationship and is inherently abusive to like, everyone. Including her Ghost, probably. Meanwhile Reagan would either be sweet innocent baby or her interest in the Eliksni would be reduced to just being a horny alienfucker depending on who you ask. Mosey and Scarper are obviously child-coded because they're smol and they've never done anything wrong ever, just harmless shenanigans. The murder and cons and fucking each other would be completely forgotten. That or they're poor tormented victims of circumstance that are excused because they're obviously traumatised. Also they're basically the same person right?
