SV has a large and complicated system of legal mechanisms set up by the administrators, who are practicing lawyers. There's magistrates you appeal to if you're infracted by a moderator, there's a public court where you can argue your case, there's a jury of members who determine if an infraction was correct... Spoiler There are a lot of Sy cuddles ahead. Sy grieves pretty deeply but is also hugged by the rest of the Lambs a lot, and takes steps towards being ok.
Back in twigland! I am now entering into Glorious Trashship Hell. Spoiler: My shame I am really really loving how Mauer fucks with Sy's head now that he acknowledges Sy as existing independent of the Academy and is trying to convert him. Mauer making adjustments to his language and his words and subtly pushing Sy while Sy notes this and tries to do the same to Mauer and negotiating for the lives of his fellow Lambs. Basically all of those jokes I made about Sy's creepy crush on Mauer are coming back to haunt me and oh god the fic is writing itself in my brain.
Off the top of my head: Would it be Parental Guidance? (Might be something else but that's what ridiculous kleptomania brings to mind.)
I'm glad I could be of help. ... and now this thread reminds me of something I should be working on...
And, because I will never pass up the chance to whine about this: whyyyyy isn't there more Dragon/Defiant fanfic? It could be so good.
I think it just comes down to the fact that they got together, and Defiant entered the picture, so late in canon. Thanks in large part to the common alternate power focus, a lot of fics start too soon for Defiant to move from who he was to become his more redemptive later self (who is awesome) and the two to get together. But yeah, I can commiserate. I really like seeing those two together.
By far my favorite pairing, yeah. Although I wouldn't mind more just fics focused on them in general, romance aside. People can write alt-power Taylor if they want to, it's their choice, but I feel like there's a lot of potential we're missing out on here.
In the interest of sparking a discussion, and finding something to read while I work on my longform fic, Has anyone else here written fanfic for Worm? I'll start with sharing what I consider my best short. For people new to Worm the short has spoilers to... around arc 17. (And knowing that information beforehand is important to the punchline.) The best Chinese place in town. Spoiler Aegis sighed. The day had been going pretty well, A mix of school holiday and uneventful patrols with the whole team had left the Brockton Bay wards team feeling less like superheros in training and more like an group of teenage friends. Then Browbeat just had to suggest stopping by a Chinese place that he claimed served the best food in town afterwards. To be fair, Browbeat was right, it was definitely the best Chinese place in town and on any other day his suggestion of gracing them with the presence of the actual Brockton Bay wards in costume would have made perfect sense. On any other day, Lung would not have just walked in the door with his lieutenants in tow. Aegis hadn't even known Lung had two lieutenants. The new one, a tinker by her costume, was saying something. "Okay, okay, sure, It's the best Chinese in town but does that really mean we should come in costume?" "Oni Lee and I have shown this restaurant our patronage more than a dozen times since we came to this city. It is only fair they reap the rewards of fame for serving their clientele so well for so long." Beside Aegis, Clockblocker was slowly lowering his mask back over his jaw, the noodles he was still slurping into his mouth forming an odd bulge under it. One of the waitresses went up to greet the new arrivals before doing a double take at seeing who had come in. Then she did a triple take, glancing to and fro from the Wards to Lung. At that point Aegis was only too well aware of just how clear the view was between their table and the entry. As, after a moment, was Lung. Aegis could have sworn he saw the Lung puff up a size in the moment the villain noticed them. "And what are all of you doing here?" Lung asked with a great deal of deliberation in his voice. Aegis's response was likewise cautious. "We were... having Chinese." "With the entire Wards team." It was a statement, not a question. Aegis looked around as if for help from the other wards, the waitress, the cook leaning into the room to see what was up, the other patrons, anyone. Not that the last group would be much help, the only other patrons of note were two business men and a pack of teenagers who were in various states of hurriedly preparing to leave, shocked, irritated, grinning boredly, grinning widely, and the curly haired girl in glasses was looking distinctly nervous. "Mm mm Mmph" Clockblocker said, before swallowing, "To be fair, it is the best Chinese place in town." Lung's eyes narrowed beneath his mask and Aegis felt as if he was shrinking while the room got larger. No wait, the room was getting larger. "Vista please, stop" Aegis whispered to her. Thankfully, the room returned to it's normal size. "Look, we're off duty, you're just here as patrons, nobody here wants the place with really good Chinese food blown up" Clockblocker started. Lung's new lieutenant looked mildly offended at that "How about you guys just sit down, enjoy your meal and we can just pack up and... go." Aegis could hear Shadow Stalker growling at that "You're saying we just back down?" "No I'm saying that Clockblocker has the right idea and as team leader I support it. If Lung lets us get out of here without a fight," Aegis shot a desperate look towards towards Lung who nodded slowly, "Then we avoid not only getting our asses kicked but also massive property damage and shouts of how it's clearly our fault." "We're seven wards." Shadow Stalker replied. "And he's one dragon. With help." Aegis quietly shot back. "Did I mention that this restaurant has great Chinese food, great Chinese food I might like to have again on another day." Clockblocker chimed in helpfully. Shadow stalker was silent for a moment before responding, "I'm not leaving my food." "We can get a doggie bag!" Aegis hissed. "Could I, also get a doggie bag" Vista asked nervously. "Uh, one for me too" Added Kid Win. "Just say one for each of us." The ward's nodded and Aegis shot another look to the waitress. Thankfully, seeing as a she finally had something she could do to resolve the situation, the waitress had leapt into action almost before Aegis turned to face her. Several tense and awkward moments later the waitress returned with a number of styrofoam boxes and the wards busied themselves pouring their plates insides as quickly as they could without spilling anything. Thankful that the ordeal was almost over, Aegis got up and led the other wards outside, giving Lung and his lieutenants a wide berth as he did so. Oddly, Lung appeared to be shaking slightly. Just as he was exiting he heard Lung's new lieutenant, the tinker, speak up. "So, two kind's of fear was it?" she asked in an amused voice. He didn't hear much of the response before laughter, long and loud, sounded from the building. --- From his booth in the back, Thomas Calvert began to to set his briefcase back on the seat besides him as the man across from him did the same. "So Max, we were discussing Medhall's need for a new office building. What can Fortress Construction do for you?"
I have a lot of ideas, but I don't seem to have enough focus to actually sit down and write them out properly. (Funny snippet, by the way.)
I can commiserate with that. (It's either hours straight of binge writing or a drought while I'm distracted, alas.) And thanks.
I also wanted to try setting some stuff post-Gold Morning, but I felt it would be better to wait until Wildbow started posting the sequel to Worm so there'd be more information to work with.
I'm sadly familiar with that feeling. Probably it's one of those things that you just have to keep practicing... so, if it helps, good luck. We're rooting for you.
I don't know if you've already tried it yourself or not, but I have a solution to that that might work for you: With Worm at least, I find it works to consult the original work whenever I'm uncertain. Between the character interludes and tagging chapters with the included characters in each, there's often enough material to get a feel for a character's decision making and style of speaking, even if that grasp fades away relatively quickly. It's not perfect, but it keeps the margin of error lower and I find it helps to keep in mind some of the smaller details that contrast with the fanon. Of course, many of Worm's chapters are so long that it can take quite some time to sort through and scroll through it all to find the bits that you're after when looking at multiple chapters in line.
Trouble is, that usually winds up with me getting into a chapter and then just rereading Worm. Which is fun, don't get me wrong, it just doesn't help with my productivity.
