Nope, it's not. I suggest strength exercises to strengthen the muscles around your ankle. That would hopefully fix the misstepping thing.

... Can someone describe this sensation in more detail because I may also do the thing and it's a bitch and a half when I'm diving with 1.5ft flippers on.

Note: My calves look fucking fantastic and I might be getting my Wonder Woman thighs back but gog damn are my ankles unhappy.

I just found out recently that the thing where when I bring my shoulders as far forward as possible and then shrug up and feel my shoulder blades like, slide out of place isn't normal? Neither is the thing where I step wrong and my hip goes "ka-thunk" and slides around the outside of the socket before settling in where it's meant to be. For me when my ankles do it it's like I have them tight and then they... slip, I suppose. Slip loose and then hurt, or click over audibly into place?

... Yep, that sounds about right.
I do the hip thing too but not nearly as often. My left collarbone will pop out on the throat-end if I sleep wrong.

And my wrists pop out on the regular, have for years. Not nearly so often as before I got on thyroid meds but like, I'll have to actively push my pisiform carpel and radius back together at least 1x a week. And I can actively wiggle my pisiform and hamate carpels.

Ooh! Who here can do the thing where you can straighten your leg and push your kneecap around in circles, it's great (gross) party trick.

Should we move this to the "Meatspace bodies: Why do you do the thing?" Thread because I love talking about weird shit like this.

I can also do the knee thing! I didn't know we had that thread but I would be down for talking about this more there, I know this kind of thing can gross people out sometimes.

*medically horrified screaming* NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL! Hips are not supposed to basically dislocate O.O I suggest both of you look into muscle strengthening exercises tout suite. *shudders*

I actually do hip exercises daily but it still... does the thing. I'm pretty sure my hip ligaments are just either too elastic or too weakened to keep the joint where it's supposed to be. -shrugs- I keep meaning to bring it up to my doctor.

congratulations everyone on your weak joint tissue!! : D My mom has a condition where ~*all*~ the joints are weak and we're pretty certain she's passed it on at a lesser extremity onto me

some days I stretch in the morning and my shoulder does a biiiig pop because it slid out of place in the night i guess. My hips don't dislocate, but they will.. spread, if I do lying down leg exercises. But I don't think that's too unusual with genetically female hips.

the ankle sensation is like.. usually if i'm running through a field, I'll step a bit wrong, and then there's a shooting pain up my ankle if I step for like 1-5 minutes, not enough to be unable to walk at all but enough that I limp for a little while until it fades off. I never really notice a specific click but since joint issues I assume it's a slight dislocation. Made playing tag difficult sometimes

one time I lightly tapped a soccer ball to a 7 year old and sprained my ankle, had to keep it in a brace for 3-5 days

Are these the sort of exercises you mean? I just blindly googled 'ankle strengthening exercises' and grabbed the first thing that looked legit, but I know that exercises can screw you up if you do them wrongly so I wanted to check. A lot of things on the search results were 'strengthen your ankle after a sprain!' type things and I don't... think my falling onto my foot because it doesn't stop where it's supposed to stop counts as a sprain. And thank you for the tip!!

These look decent, with the caveat that I am not a physical therapist, and that I would normally refer people to a physical therapist for these kinds of exercises. If you have access to one, I would suggest going for a consultation to get a treatment plan :) If you don't, I think those look like a good place to start.

Thank you! I don't have access to a physical therapist, but I can at least ask my occupational therapist what she thinks of them, so I'll do that.

i'mma keep resurrecting this thread because i have nowhere else i feel safe crowing about what to other people are teeny little milestones--

    since my last check-in:
i am down to a size 2x shirt for the first time since highschool and it ISNT TIGHT ON ME even after shrinking it in the wash!!!!
my legs have actual definition in the thighs and around the knees again
and, what i just found out tonight, is that i am officially in good enough shape that i can get down to my aunt's house by hopping the fence, something i have not been able to do since *middle school*

that last bullet is especially important to me. MIDDLE SCHOOL. i may not be as skinny as i was then, but this means all my effort has paid off in a way that i can measure OTHER than with numbers. i'm 23. i'm supposed to be able to do stupid shit like climb fences and sneak through yards to get food and booze and meet people on the sly and all that YA nonsense and now i can finally do it.

i'm so fucking happy you guys don't even know

i wasnt even out of breath.

i walked down to the river and back and wasn't in heaps of pain afterwards! i'm going to stick with that for a week or so, then shoot for the co-op, which is about 2 blocks farther.

if i can walk to the co-op and back without giving myself a flareup, i'll be able to get all the tasty little specialty foods they have there, like teriyaki baked tofu, and spicy garlic chicken won tons, and bulk coffee so i can get just enough for a couple-three pitchers of coldbrew instead of a big jar that's going to go sour and sharp in the cupboard before i finish it.

A while back I finally thought to google low-impact cardio since walking hasn't really been sufficient for the health goals I need to meet, and I found this place. It has a ton of workouts at various lengths and intensities, and the low-impact stuff really is low impact. It's been working out pretty well for me so far, even if I haven't met any particular goals yet. It's also great for days when I can't bear to leave the house - now if I really can't, I can still get exercise that feels like exercise.

    The guy's patter is sometimes annoying, but for the most part I like his style. He's upbeat but no nonsense without being harsh, and the exercises don't take too much floor space. It's a nice contrast to the cardio workouts that feature creepily manic blondes that never. stop. smiling. >_>;

I forgot to mention - the videos I've used have been good about the dude reminding the viewer that it's okay to take breaks if you need to, it's okay if you can't bend as far or raise your knee as high as he can, you should push but not hurt yourself, stuff like that. I ran across an earlier video (made in 2013) that was very "PUSH PUSH PUSH IT'S ALL IN YOUR MIND NEVER REST", but the stuff from 2015 on is way more sensible.

4 weeks to the race! Bad run this morning - I think I did not drink enough water yesterday, I definitely didn't start early enough to dodge most of the heat, the humidity was murder, and I got rained on for the last hour. Pros of rain: cooler. Cons of rain: wet socks and squelchy shoes.

Next weekend I'm doing a 15 mile long run on Saturday and then a hilly 10 mile race on Sunday with a coworker. This may have been a stupid decision, but I'm not planning to run hard in the race. We'll see how it goes. The week after that is my longest run - 22 miles. Then I taper for two weeks and the race is on the 18th.

The knockoff Camelbak I got seems to work okay. I need to sew a loop onto one of the straps to hold the drinking tube out of the way. The little side pockets on the waist belt are perfect for holding gels and car keys!
