My webcam does work in the Windows partition of the computer, seemingly thanks to how Windows' shitty confetti-like granting of root access means it can easily get needed drivers for devices, or maybe because the camera didn't have Linux in mind. So I don't have to be stuck holding a phone to do camera stuff. Bad resolution, but it's a start. @unknownanonymous I've performed an initial camera test!

there is an in-browser web skype! it's still bs and lag on my computer to try being in a large chat or reread a chat's archive, but if i intend to voice chat with people who insist on using skype, i have that option for not loading the program
I probably should have realized this earlier, but the eye-stinging gas that onions release when you cut them goes on the list of "defense mechanisms that humans joke about whilst devouring the things that the mechanisms were supposed to defend".

I always assumed it was just aerosolized onion juice. (Which, well, eye-stinging is definitely in the "NO DON'T EAT ME" category, so it ends up the same anyway, but.)
According to Wikipedia the gas is actually produced by a two-stage reaction that only triggers when certain cells are damaged, so it's probably not even in regular onion juice.
yesterday i learnt how to do gel electroporosis (almost certainly spelt wrong), how to work a small centrifuge, what happens when someone doesn't balance the stuff they're centrifuging on a big centrifuge properly, how to use genbank+BLAST, and so on! (there was a field trip to massey's biotech lab)
