TIL you can be allergic to mint. Also, Hummingbird learned that mint is not the cooler version of capsacin, and that mint toothpaste isn't a culturally endorsed form of masochism.
Latin deus is not of the same origin as Greek theos; if it were, it would be *feus. Instead, it comes from Zeus. Fedora, however, does come from theos. *tips hat* M'etymology.
The way my chef friend seasons his cast iron pans... is by making fried chicken and then roasting potato wedges in the pan every three months or so in it. It sounds both tasty and practical.
there's an Android emulator for the PC it's called Bluestacks seems to work well or at least Terragenesis is running better on my laptop than it was on my phone
I wonder if I can play the thylacine resurrection game that refuses to work on my game you may have just saved it for me thank you.
shit I apparently deleted it off my phone because it never worked and now I can't find it, but I will let you know when I find out. I thought it was called Reanimator, but when I type that in Google play I just get lovecraft stuff.
black and blanc/blanco come from the same root word, which is why they sound so similar despite being antonyms. the original root word evoked something like a flame, so as languages split off from the original indo-european, it came to refer to either black color left after something is burned or the bright color of a flash of flame in different languages (source)
The beginnings of the ero-guro movement sparked queer visibility in Japanese media. (Obvious warnings for violent and surreal art in that link.)
So I already knew about the lady who copyrighted trademarked "cocky" in romance novel titles (!?) and the resultant drama. But today I learned that 1) even Anne Rice thinks this is excessive (and god damn is that an accomplishment) and 2) the US patent and trademark office is now fielding a lawsuit petition that involves the phrase “'A Cocky Werewolf: A Gay M/M Mpreg Werewolf Shifter Romance’ by Wolfgang Glasscock”
this is amazing and i'm loving it :D:D:D anne rice, standing up against abuse of ip law. man, 2018 is wild. and it's not copyrighted, it's trademarked. there's a difference.
TIL that koalas have one of the smallest brain mass to weight ratios of any mammal, and are so dumb that they have trouble responding to new situations, such as leaves on a flat table instead of a tree
TIL that the microphone troubles I've been having, which drove me to replace a headset and then look into getting a stand microphone, have...almost definitely all been the result of me using the browser version of Discord, instead of the desktop app version. Using the app version, I had exactly zero problems being clearly heard by my coplayers and dm in the session last night, as opposed to the goddamn voodoo chicken dance I've had to do every single time for the past few months with the browser version. I wasn't even using the fucking stand mic yet, I was testing to see if the headset would work or if I should use the phone app.
TIL that whoever made the censored version of I Write Sins Not Tragedies decided that the problematic part of the word "goddamn" is the first syllable, leaving the song with an awkward pause followed by a very clear "damn door". Evidence:
hah, yeah, i grew up in a very conservative area with some truly ridiculous radio censorship, and i was always mystified as to why the "god" part was always censored out, not the "damn" part. (although i think the silliest censorship i remember was blanking out the word "gun" from "gunfight")
