People sometimes miss stuff. I'm literally zero percent surprised though about changelings being biliterate, all the trolls and changelings appear to be biliterate.

 

man i doubt even just biliterate though in the case of the changelings, we've had what-may-be-semi-confirmation by showrunner comments on tumblr that strickler is like 400 years old so there is no way they don't rack up the languages with time

 

in some case they speak multiple languages besides "Troll" and "English" since Blinkey seems to sprinkle French phrases and words in his statements.

It can't be assumed Gatto's second language is English if he's in Argentina, either.

headcanon: becoming trollhunter makes you master of All Languages and you exude a certain amount of magic to make those around you understand as well, which is why they could talk to Gatto so easily and he understand them.

The amulet can translate books, why not speech?

I'd buy it. The amulet already translates a lots, wouldn't seem that out of place for it to translate spoken word too!

 

the problem arises when you realize AAARRRGGHH!!! and Toby are often alone together [no accounting for NotEnrique and Claire, since NotEnrique is centuries old already and he's supposed to pose as human], hence me suggesting that the amulet pulled a WHOOSH CURSE and toby/claire can understand the trolls and vice versa because its magic "leaked" and they're all closest to jim

i get that "they speak english for the audience's sake" is a thing since the trolls whisper in their own language and we aren't privy to it, but like. maybe the human kids CAN understand and we're just exposed to the small details of "these aren't wacky animal sidekicks"

Oh yeah, I totally can dig that. Although I do imagine several of those trolls know english anyways. Just because I'm pretty sure I remember Blinky mentioning reading something in a human phone booth.

 

Yeah, this totally isnt counting the fact that blinky is a nerd and would get shoved in a locker in troll school [which is for trolls], obviously it's more in specific cases re: humans or stationary trolls such as gatto!

Hey so calling back to the book vs the show, it said in the book Jim was raised by his dad

I feel like that would endear me to him more if he were raised by a single father because you NEVER see those situations, or at least I haven't? Where it's a deadbeat mom, not just UR MOM TRAGICALLY DIED IM SO SORRY WEH, but like. Just she left for another guy? It never happens.

i've heard tell that book!claire is a chubby scruffy punk girl and that book!aaarrrgh was a lady and that book!blinky was an eldritch tentacle monster with Many Eyes

if it's anything like how dreamworks treated how to train your dragon then "everything" is what's different.

i havent read the books in a long time [i think i stopped at how to break a dragon's heart], but things i distinctly remember:

• there was no "twins" to ruffnut and tuffnut. it was just tuffnut [jr], and he was a pretty generic background character
• astrid doesnt exist in the books. she replaced camicazi, who was the daughter of the rival all-female viking leader big boobied bertha, who [since the books are an autobiography of hiccup's life], is regarded as hiccup's wife but in the flashbacks she's his best friend
• fishlegs was skinny and sort of a runt, thats why his name is fishlegs
• the dragons talk. you can't ride most of them, and to "train" them the vikings just yelled really loudly to get their attention. hiccup spoke dragonese and he would try talking to them. it ends as well as you expect half the time
• toothless is a common/garden dragon with no teeth, and his favorite thing is "choklat snik snaks" [cookies]. he also likes to do a cak-cak on hiccup's pillow
• hiccup was supposed to get the monstrous nightmare in his "trial" to become a viking [all viking children climb a sheer cliff and steal a dragon egg to train and raise into a pet]. Monstrous nightmares are for the leaders only. Snotlout cheated.
• basically the dragons are more or less giant fucking parrots
• sometimes they pull sleds

dreamworks missed a golden opportunity with dragonese. look at these words

i could probably see a bunch of talk with how gunmar made AAARRRGGHH!!! his lieutenant for sexing purposes and there had to be SOME non-battle reason she was second in command /rumor /rumor /rumor but also like except for the krubera queen do we ever see a female troll remotely in power? we have wumpa [according to tvtropes all the quagawumps are female save the king], bagbrella [is that how her name is spelled bc i cant find SHIT on her even though shes v recurring], and nomura, but nomura is technically a changling, not a true troll.

maybe the stalkling was female?

regardless, there aren't many females in power, and making AAARRRGGHH!!! one would have been a bonus
