javelins are indeed pointy poles! well, fancy ones. regular pointy poles are stakes, I think. but when I say "pole," I'm not referring to "everything that might be grouped in the pole family," I'm referring to "regular pole, y'know, a really long, skinny cylinder that you hold." furthermore! the butt of a javelin isn't pointy, 'tis true, but javelins are designed to poke things with the pointy end, not the butt. that is, when you are poking something with a javelin, chances are you're using the pointy end, 'cause that's what it's for. I will assume you are poking with the pointy end until otherwise informed. >:]

yo players!

so I'm kinda worried at this point that if we don't get this show on the road, it's just... never gonna happen, so I have a proposal for you all. how do you feel about kinda just starting the adventure? I know not all of you are done with your character sheets, and in an ideal world you all would be before we started, but most of you are, and that means a goddamn lot of you. in other words, I think we have a critical mass of PCs at this point.

and anyone who isn't done with their character (@Lazarae and @KarrinBlue, I believe) doesn't have to start playing just now if they don't want to! I can either run your character as an NPC on skeleton stats until you feel ready to jump in, or (and I recommend this if you are invested in your character's social interactions/development as a person/etc., 'cause if I'm NPCing someone I'm kinda just gonna... interact as little as possible to avoid screwing with your characterization) your character can join the rest of the party later in the adventure whenever you feel ready. it's pretty episodic, so there shouldn't be a problem introducing new party members—it's not like they'd have to randomly appear in the middle of a megadungeon. :P and if the rest of the party has leveled up by then, your character doesn't have to start at first level, either.

that option is also open to people whose character sheets are done but are not quite ready themselves! really, I can run your character for a while at any point if you ever wanna step out for a bit. you just gotta ask. :)

anyway, how do you guys feel about this proposal?

I believe I've got confirmations from seven of you (@NevermorePoe, @The Frood Abides, @Helen of Boy, @KarrinBlue, @garden, @Arxon, and @swirlingflight), which just leaves @Lazarae, who in any case would have to sit out for a while, since it's^* the one without a posted character sheet. (hope you're okay, Lazarae, and best wishes if you aren't. brainbugs being brainbugs, I'd like to make it clear, again, that it's totally okay that you've stepped out for a while. and while of course I'd rather you be here, you aren't hindering anyone else's playing experience, though perhaps it'd be enriched by your presence. :3)

but anyway, let's get this show on the road!

I'm genderfluid enough that I don't usually have a strong preference. I guess feminine more often than masculine, maybe? I don't list them because it doesn't usually matter much, and isn't a consistent enough thing that anyone can do much with any other answer, anyway. :P

I don't recall any, but I don't know I kept up with everyone else as well. I imagine if you aren't just arriving, though, you could justify popping out of the inn even if you were with someone else, just checking what was happening?

 

yeah, in the intro I used the general "you" and explained why people might be at the inn to justify characters' presence there. I wanted to give you guys some leeway in deciding how you turned up there while still stating you were all at the inn. :)

 

aaaaactually this is going in here 'cause it's all OOC mechanics!

so the cultist actually rolled higher on initiative than Ksualtth did! he's gonna use his movement to get up in melee range and slash at her, 'cause he's an overzealous idiot, and he hits and does damage. (btw, you didn't specify whether you had your shield or not. doesn't matter here, 'cause he hits either way, but in future I'd like you to let me know! either tell me to assume she's always carrying the shield or specify every time, please.)

since the cultist got in melee range, Ksualtth is either going to spend some of her movement backing up (and open herself up to an attack of opportunity from the cultist), or she is going to roll to hit again with disadvantage for attacking in melee with a ranged weapon. if she rerolls she's prrrrobably not going to crit again, in which case I'mma use your first d6 roll and make it 11 damage instead. (a nat 20 is a critical hit, btw, but I'm not going to use a crit table. :P just double your damage dice like you did here.)
edit: or she can switch weapons and make a melee attack, rerolling as appropriate.

anyway, let me know what Ksualtth does and we'll take it from there! (incidentally, your rolls are just what's needed for individual combat like this, but you miiiight want to hold off on attack descriptions if your initiative roll is so low. :P)

to-hit: 15 + 3 = 18
damage: 2 + 1 = 3
I'm using the "Cultist" entry in the Monster Manual if anybody wants to check my math. :P

additional edit: did you forget to roll with advantage for initiative as per the Natural Explorer feat, or were your rolls just that shitty? :P

 

@esotericPrognosticator what's the grange built of? Mostly stone, or mostly wood and thatch, or something else?

 

fieldstone with a slate roof—pretty sturdy! it's got big barn-y wooden doors, though.
