Yep, confirmed here by dataminers. Between that and equipment (weapons) in one world turning into equipment (pencils) in the other, aand there's extra evidence for the light and dark worlds being linked in ways where there's mundane representations of everything in the light world.

So I can't seem to find it now, but earlier I read a post theorizing that the "Prince from the dark" referred to in the prophecy is actually Lancer, not Ralsei. If I'm remembering right, their main points were that 1) unlike Ralsei, Lancer is actually the son of a king, and 2) Ralsei had no interaction with any of the caged monarchs. I'll link the post if I find it again.

If the theory is true, that would mean Asriel is up to his old habit of inserting himself into the story so he can keep playing with his sibling/the protagonist, but he’s made himself the most valuable NPC rather than the final boss.

Yeah, I agree with that theory. Ralsei is... an odd one. There's definitely things he's not telling us. I also think the game avoids using the word 'prince' with Lancer so as to avoid us making that connection so automatically and so easily.

I love that meta! The part about Ralsei acting excessively passive seems like Asriel is trying to imitate pacifist!Frisk, but without fully understanding their actions.

Thank you... glad to hear it's appreciated!

and man.. It could be! Ralsei is very interesting... I have a lot of different concurrent theories about him, and it really depends whether he's existing as his own entity onto himself (I mostly really wonder about this because of all of his lore on darkners), or if he is just a manifestation of actual world!Asriel in some way which is... quite possible. To what degree Asriel would even be aware of Frisk is something I'm curious about... Asriel is definitely at the core of the mystery of Deltarune though

I don't think Asriel's natural nature is so passive and flexible inasmuch as what he wants to be, so I'm curious to see how things change and crack as we get further.

also a totally wild out there theory without much ground that I have but which is still viable at this point is this is a world where Chara and Asriel's plan succeeds, angel's heaven. :v But that might just be a wish because I'd really like that concept to be explored + we haven't seen Asriel yet so he could feasibly be fused with his old bff in this world

Yeah, the theory that Deltarune is an AU that diverged from Undertale back then is a fun one. It makes it so neither game's a prequel or sequel to the other, and calls back to the whole angel prophecy nicely:
If the Angel of Undertale has any connection, or even similarity, to the Angel of the Angel's Heaven, that gives some interesting and ominous notions as to why it's such a threat to the balance of the world that the heroes are supposed to banish it.

    But...
If boss monsters age in Deltarune like they did in Undertale, then something's not quite right with that theory.
DR!Asriel is a few years older than Kris, and they were both in school at the same time, for a while. Either he's aged very slowly, or the whole situation with Chara happened not all that long ago - in which case, why do none of the light world monsters mention it? The town looks very settled into, there isn't a single hint that they used to be sealed underground... and there aren't any other humans in town, which might suggest something suspicious about how this happy surface world was created.

i thought toby fox confirmed that deltarune is an alternate universe?

    he did yeah

doesn't rule out it being a prequel though, since for all we know the weird machine in the skelebro's basement is a dimensional portal and that's why sans has a concept of burning in hell

with an alternate universe its like... well, when does the divergence occur?

for instance, we can assume... our original ut world, nothing happens Beyond what has happened (though things in the past happened that we weren't privy to). but we could even be talking about a divergence that happens some point mid game (theoretically). same characters, same elements are theoretically connected. like, say, i'd assume the symbology of angels are tied to similar characters for dramatic irony. of course, we even have the fact... asriel and kris work on an angel together for church. so that's something.

imo, we definitely have prequel elements implied. Sans and Lancer have So many elements in common that there is either a connection or a purposeful misdirection/red herring. it's interesting because despite this being an au, I do think it has potential to shed light on the past for the 'main universe' of characters.

I’m of the opinion that deltarune is essentially post-Scratch, whatever the ut universe’s equivalent of the Scratch is. After the game ended and the player left, someone (presumably Asriel considering his influence in dr, or maybe Gaster) acquired or retained universe-altering powers and changed everything.

Speaking of that machine, I just realized that whatever it does, Flowey is left completely alone with it in the Underground at the end of a true pacifist run. So that’s something.

He did, yeah. And he specified it in some ways that we can still spitball some theories, but the verbatim was:

    So the key things are
    - Deltarune is not the same world as Undertale.
    - Deltarune doesn't change anything about the world of Undertale, doesn't break or steal or corrupt the happy ending, doesn't scratch the happy ending.
    - Our Undertale files are as we left them, there's nothing to worry about for them.
    - It's a different world, with different characters (characters we've never met and AU versions of characters we think we know)
    - Deltarune is not a sequel to Undertale

But the things I'm having fun conspiracy theorizing on are:
He doesn't specify if it's a branching AU that diverged at some point, as people believe is the case with some of the Legend of Zelda games.
He doesn't specify whether Deltarune - which was conceived of before Undertale, and worked on before/as Undertale became a thing - isn't the prequel here.
So "Deltarune is the prequel to Undertale, and something happens to scratch Deltarune" would still comply with what Toby told us.

    I'm especially having fun with:
"Deltarune's world is a different one"
and one thing the Riverperson can ominously say - and not expand on - in Undertale:
"Beware of the man who came from the other world"

Alternate universes seem to play a big role, given how the object in Asriel's dresser changes based on which save file you're using.

Here's the reddit post about it, at least.

Aside from the sweater there's a school ID and a coupon book. Nothing huge, necessarily... except that you have three saves with differences after taking over Kris' save file, and the changes are hard-locked to the file in question, there's no "fun" value or anything like that this time.

Oh man, I am happy to hear that. I assumed there'd be something with the files, since Undertale had some interesting things going on with the file names.

back with Undertale, it seems like the save file numbers corresponded to the order of the fallen souls and/or entities otherwise capable of saving and loading
file_0 is the permanent overall file maintained between new games (but not true resets). The original.
file_9 is the file being used for the current things, Frisk
file_8 is the file used to track that you've fought Flowey, specifically omega Flowey, so that you don't repeat that battle after Asgore
file_2 through file_7, or at least a couple of them, are mentioned during the Flowey fight when he does his saving and loading. And he's got the 6 souls at the time.

So... files 2 - 7 were the fallen humans, 8 is Flowey, 9 is Frisk. I'm not sure whether file_0 is Chara and the never seen file_1 would have been the combined Asriel&Chara soul, or if file_1 would have been Chara and file_0 is the player... but it sure works out neatly.

With Deltarune, the files are different. I see six save files for chapter one, with the save files formatted filech1_X with X being the various numbers... and the numbers don't make a whole lot of sense to me?

I've got a game saved in each of the save slots, and:
filech1_0 and filech1_3 share the name of the top save slot,
    filech1_1 and filech1_4 the middle,
filech1_2 and filech1_9 the bottom one.
I think, in each of those pairs, one is the 'temp' file and one is the 'overall' file just like Undertale did. I played a lot (and died against a certain secret boss) in the first and second save slots, and the numbers between _0 and _3, _1 and _4, aren't exactly the same. I just made a third save file and rushed to the first possible save spot and closed, and _2 and _9 have the exact same numbers all the way down.

What I don't know, what I don't have a guess about, is why it jumps to _9 instead of being _5. Why the files are so close except for that.

Also, fun thing: if you move all your save files, then open Deltarune? It brings you to a black and green version of the save slots page, and the program's CONTACT again.
