I think as much as I want Asriel to live, that's ultimately selfish of me. I think you guys convinced me that it'd be much better to let flowey pass on once he overcame his fear of death so that they can both find peace finally. The chara situation also needs addressed in such a way that Chara can stop being a vengeful spirit. Irritable houseplant flowey that occassionally bites people is a fav of mine too :3
So, my first run through Undertale, I entered the name 'garden', as could perhaps be expected. And then today while listening to some Undertale songs and remixes, in the 'suggested videos' at the end of a video, there was a remix titled "g a r d e n" and I was basically 0_0. Turns out it was Spoiler: neutral ending a remix of the music in the Flowey boss fight, which, uh, makes the title make more sense. (Because. Plants. Garden. Yeah.) Still kinda creeped me out, though.
Sooooo. I just started a new game, and decided to futz around the house a while before asking to Leave The Ruins. I slept in the bed again, which I had never done before. Spoiler You have a short dream. A dream from Chara's POV. Asgore, saying "[Name, please... Wake up! You are the future of humans and monsters..." Repeatedly sleeping just got me the same dream. But yeah, confirmation, before you even leave the ruins, you can be having dreams of Chara's death.
My friend started playing the game and liking it quite a bit. Recently, he told me with some concern that he'd just killed Sans in the Golden hall, and worried about whether this would fuck up his Pacifist run. I'm glad I recced it to the fucker. Also, I was playing through it at my Grandma's and she asked what I was laughing about, I showed her and weirdly enough she liked what she saw. She thinks Papyrus is the best character ever and likes that you're 'not allowed' to kill the monsters. She really disapproved of Jerry though, told me he was like this kid I used to hang out with. Anyway, she found it fucking hilarious that you're just supposed to ditch him. I am proud that my Grandma is both a skelefriend and a pacifist, I had to have inherited my great taste from SOMEWHERE.
Ditching Jerry is the only good thing you can do for him. Meanwhile in my attempt at a geno run, my idiot self just. kept trying to kill him. Jerry wtf why are you so hard to kill??? you don't attack??? your defense is just off the charts??? RIDICULOUS PLZ NO MORE
Man. Fandom missed a chance with this no mercy/genocide argument. We could have called the run where you go out of your way to murder everyone, the determinator run.
Don't vnderstand why the "kill absolvtely everyone" rvn is called No ^^ercy. I figvred that wovld be the rvn where yov killed everyone yov ca^^e across, cavse show no ^^ercy and all. It doesn't i^^ply going ovt of yovr way to kill everyone, I don't think. Genocide is ^^ore fitting, becavse yov can't ]vst stv^^ple vpon killing everyone. It's a grind. It's so^^ething yov have to want.
i think toby fox once mentioned on twitter that he doesn't like it being called 'genocide' run but uh... no mercy is inaccurate and it fits pretty much any definition of genocide i can think of so i'm reluctant to call it by a name that doesn't really fit.
That's a frequent distinction! It's mostly that Toby asked the fandom not to call it genocide, and the fandom at large hasn't agreed yet to do that, let alone use a different term.
Maybe we could distinguish like between the pacifist normal and the true pacifist, vs the no mercy normal and true no mercy?
No mercy doesn't even begin to imply 'go out of your way to slaughter every last living thing', though. It's supremely ill-fitting. I think Toby's lost the fight on this one, unless he comes up with a different term that actually fits (and even then...). A less fraught term would be 'obliteration run'.
Okay, so over in the Undertale OOC roleplay thread I noted that I was trying to puzzle out something with Papyrus. Spoiler Specifically, which of his ideas were his and which were Flowey's. (and more generally what flattery and predictions did Flowey make to him, but the suggestions are more important.) The one time that's 100% Flowey's suggestion is when everyone shows up at the end of a true pacifist run, before Asriel's boss battle. Alphys asks how he knew to call, Papyrus says a little flower told him, and Flowey shows up. The other time that I'm now 99.999% sure of is when uou continue a pacifist run to make it a true pacifist run, after you spare Flowey and he advises you to be a better friend to Alphys. Undyne calls you, and hisses at Papyrus "Shut up Papyrus! This was your idea!" (To get you to deliver her letter, since she writes letters but never delivers them because she changes her mind and wants to rewrite them halfway there.) After the garbage date with Alphys, Papyrus calls you. (Thanks to Game Grumps for just getting this far, it made transcribing easier.) If the "howdy" wasn't enough to make me suspicious, a lot of the rest of that would. It looks like Flowey herding people via Papyrus to me. Cause like, he can't save anymore, but he remembers a lot of things between continues. (He can't remember if you kill him and then reload an obliteration run before answering Chara, sadly). I guess I'm asking, does anyone remember anything else suspicious that he does or says that hints he's following someone else's suggestion?
