Hahaha, yeah. Creatures! The newest game is 17 years old, the community has resorted to making a spiritual sequel because Spil Games isn't doing anything with the rights and won't sell them, a creature can crash the game by being born if its brain is too big, there's a glitch where if something is in the airlock when it opens and it doesn't explode, it becomes unbelievably bouncy and this glitch can be triggered just by holding the thing in there while the airlock opens, and we have absolutely no idea how the Abyss Dragon breed can teleport, and it can't be replicated by any other breed. Old games. Just...old games. EDIT: rearranged things
By the way there's a bunch of other glitches in Creatures. For example, the word 'wallbonk' came from Creatures! Some early official genomes had an issue with overproducing the chemical that made the creature think it was a good idea for it to turn around, resulting in creatures turning around twice and going in the same direction they originally were. Result: creatures walking into walls repeatedly. (There were some other issues-C1 genomes originally had all the aging genes except for the 'die of old age' gene, which got fixed quickly, vanilla C3s forget everything whenever they sleep (nearly all fan-made genomes have the fix for that) and C2 norns had One Hour Stupidity Syndrome.)
Anyway, back to Undertale. Some monster subspecies are probably extinct at the time of the game. However, they could be revived. In fact post-game they probably were revived pretty quickly. In fact, de-extinction programs had already started by the time of the game-that's where the skelebros come from. Meanwhile, other monster subspecies had their growth affected by the Underground. Wyverns, for example, were remaining roughly human-sized, not properly transitioning to quadrupediality, and frequently had undersized wings. After getting to the surface, however, any child wyverns (coughMKcough) would begin to develop normally.
Monster species: Boss Monster (can only naturally have children once, usually have litters), Reptilian (wyverns, whatever Alphys is, etc), Aquatic, Avian, Insectoid, Plant, Dog, Mammalian, Elemental, there's probably a few others too. Sometimes there's weird monsters that are in one species but look like they really don't belong there. EDIT: for example Undyne and Onionsan are, surprisingly, the same species. So are Grillby and the slime janitor.
note that apart from boss monsters, elementals, dogs, reptilians and avians those species delineations are open to change
what swirlingflight said. temmie is temmie. ETA: by which i mean, temmies are a separate species from other monsters. temmies are also endangered, given that their whole population is in Tem Village and a village has "a few hundred to a few thousand" people, with Tem Village looking like it's on the few hundred range after taking into account the RPG trope Thriving Ghost Town.
...huh. Earlier headcanon about human souls may have been inspired by Vienna Teng's Level Up, which is a ridiculously Frisk song. ETA: Specifically, the lyrics "Lord we are all cinders/Of a fire burning long ago/But here it is the knock knock knock of your own heart that matters".
i found the meta gaster: the myth that devours itself on ao3, and read it and now i feel weird. like, it is a well-done meta, it makes sense and all, but the idea that The Gaster Fanon Is All Completely Wrong is bugging me and honestly, it takes a really insulting tone sometimes. and just yeah, it's weird, seeing how much of the gaster image in my head isn't actually canon-canon. and that i'm invested in it anyway.
Man, that was an interesting read. It was kind of dense and condescending but it does articulate a lot of problems I'd been having with The Gaster Mystery. Spoiler: Undertale Spoilers New timeline as best I understand it: Sans/Gaster was the royal scientist ≥ 100 years ago, makes the core. Chara and Asriel try to break the barrier to terrible effect. Gaster acquires the tapes we see in the True Lab and begins work on a time machine to fix things? This goes badly wrong somehow, sends Gaster/Sans/Papyrus to the future? 6 humans fall, reach Asgore, and die. Sans and Papyrus arrive in Snowdin, assert themselves. Sans makes his promise to Toriel. Alphys makes Mettaton, becomes new royal scientist. Alphys begins DT experiments. Amalgamates happen. Flowey wakes up. Flowey's timeline shenanigans. Frisk arrives. It sure would explain a lot. Since Asgore is still alive, all these years later, maybe he's the one paying Sans and Papyrus's bills.
I have a weird, bad reaction to any Gaster theories that take Alphys' actions and give them all to Gaster even if they might make a little sense, it's an instant nope. like attributing the amalgamates or Flowey's creation to Gaster? just no
I haven't managed to read that summary/analysis fic yet, so I can't give any feedback or thoughts on it. Marking this as an intent to.... eventually.
i'm relieved that you think it was conscending too. i was worried that i might've been seeing it as more insulting than it. and that's a good timeline, thanks. :D it's good to see an undertale timeline theory actually written out explicitly like that, instead of just implied.
I've seen another thing about Gaster theories that pointed out that one of the Gaster Followers implies that Asgore at least remembers Gaster, and that nowhere does the game imply that Gaster was erased, merely scattered.
i have no idea why this is amusing to me but: Frisk: "Is the sign on your door an exception or a clarification?" Papyrus: "Yes." just. "yes."
