in the AU Chara fell into an underground without boss monsters-the monarchs are OCs of some sort. They still adopt Chara.

Chara has their soul scanned by Gaster, who comments on all the differences between a human soul and a monster soul. Chara offhandedly mentions that it'd be really interesting to see a monster with some of the traits Gaster identified as not being reliant on a physical body. Chara is royalty and Gaster is the Royal Scientist so he's like, "oh I guess that's my new project now!"

Chara is confused that Gaster is suddenly doing research on making artificial 'wombs' (scare quotes because the organ involved might not be called a womb) for monsters, but figures it's to resolve the issue of some monster species being very, very rare-for example there's only one turtle monster and his name is Gerson.

Then suddenly a few months after Gaster announces the success of his artificial womb project, which was apparently required for some other project one of the scions had requested (Chara assumes it's the other kid), the whole royal family is called to the lab
and presented with these...tiny infants...of a new monster species
    Gaster explains
and Chara realizes that they accidentally ordered a project

Chara gets to name them because Gaster is bad at names so the babies just got a letter/number designation like all other projects. Chara is very offended at the babies having the letter/number designation until Gaster is like "I didn't know what to name them but had to put something down in my notes, do you want to name them?"

Chara probably survives in this AU, so all the fallen children fall into a friendlier Underground. It's also a more heavily populated Underground-Chara's death in canon likely resulted in a population crash, but here the monsters know that even in the worst case scenario it's only a century or so until they're free, and in the meantime the royal scientists are focusing a lot on improving infrastructure and so on.

The Boss Monsters in this AU are somewhat different from the Boss Monsters in canon: while they look normal, most of the time, they have some shapeshifting capability, know a lot more of what they can do, and have some attacks that they don't have in canon.

honestly chara's death relied on a whole bunch of individual factors, and changing any of them would likely have resulted in chara surviving

like, any random monster could probably have unknowingly saved chara's life just by explaining their title to them

that's referring to how chara was called the "hope of humans and monsters," right?

  5. Wingyl

    Wingyl Allegedly Magic

    yup

chara seems to have taken it as "it is chara's duty to die for the monsters" but it seemed to have really been "chara is the living proof that humans and monsters can get along"

yep. i figured that was what you meant but i wasn't entirely sure.

Ahh. I can see that as a take on it.

I'm so used to the more morbid takes, where Chara comes up with that alternative interpretation as a way of going out doing something good, that I was confused by what you meant at first.

and i reckon that chara's interpretation of "the hope of humans and monsters" was also influenced by the delta rune prophecy about the angel, that they assumed being the former meant they were also the latter.

Charlie I got no strings to hold me down

idk I kind of figured that chara had a two fold plan there? like chara. I think undertale has a theme about 'letting go' and chara and asriel are both examples of people who cannot let go and who are harmed by it. I think for better or worse they serve as examples to us. chara not letting go of their bad experiences and ultimately... I think chara wants revenge on the people who hurt them, and is depressed, and also thinks their death could be useful. chara probably has a lot of reasons they want to die. I think chara's in that stage of... incredible hurt, and doesn't get the chance to grow from it because chara dies? the title could definitely/probably was a contributing factor, but I don't think it was the title alone weighing heavy on those little shoulders.

OMFG YES. This is relevant to my interests. Mettaton has charisma for days and if he gets injured in the ring, and his chassis is pretty easily repaired. The ideal pro wrestler. Vince McMahon wants a billion of him.

(I have a whole headcanon about how Undyne would love wrestling because it's like live action anime, with choreographed fight scenes, legitimate danger of breaking one's body, big emotional speeches, and explosions.)

  13. We're going to Cheesecake Factory for lunch with my niece, and apparently they have a "glamburger" section on their menu. My sister is a bit too excited by this, considering she doesn't even eat burgers.

crossposted from a discord channel with a friend:

    i was thinking of underfell
    and like...instead of pacifist/genocide it's redeemer/survivor, so it's kind of...swapped the active one?
what if that wasn't the only thing swapped

what if chara started out with like, really short narration and lots of "..." and not many jokes, and in the survivor route they let themself get attached early and start chattering away to distract themself and frisk from the horror of the situation

and in redeemer they stay quiet but the narration slowly grows warmer anyway, until by the end they're communicating in short sentences and lots of "..." and also lots of feelings/concepts, like Ashes of the Past deoxys
so instead of "despite everything, it's still you", there'd be
    "* still you
    *[affection]"
    or maybe
    "*still you, friend"
    *[affection]"

shitposty-but-also-kinda-deep thought: sometimes i try to imagine what the discussions/arguments/wanks/whatever would be in an au real world in which underfell or underswap came first as the canon game and undertale was a popular fandom au of it. like, would undertale sans make sense to fans of underswap sans, if underswap came first? would undertale flowey make no sense to underswap temmie fans? would underfell or underswap sans consistently be the most popular character? basically, what would underswap and/or underfell be without the context of them being variations on undertale, and what would undertale be if it was the au?

(in case what i said up there was a mess of confusing words, this is it in less words and more visually oriented. still in words but simpler, hopefully.

    our world:

    undertale -> underfell and underswap

    hypothetical reversed world:

    underfell/underswap -> undertale)

basically, i think the undertale fandom's phenomenon of popular, free-for-anyone-to-use fan aus is fascinating and awesome and it inspired me to get really meta. au of our world about aus meta. :P

I can hear people from the Underfell videogame universe crying for people to "stop woobifying Papyrus, what is this," re: Undertale Papyrus. Not sure woobify is the right term, but something of erasing what makes a character conflict-driving, in favor of someone friendly and pleasant and... wait, that's what Pap does. Hmm.

I dunno, canon Papyrus is friendly and pleasant, but he also does have personality flaws and problems too, he's not that one-dimensional.

hahaha yes i can totally see that :D

"why is ut papyrus such a cinnamon roll?"

"why does everyone else think he's so fragile in this au? in canon, he could totally whup undyne's ass!"

"his relationship with sans in undertale is disconcertingly desexualized. where is all the dominance and submission?"
he's not one-dimensional, yeah, and i don't think swirl was saying he was, but ut papyrus might feel weird and mischaracterized and "how did they get from there to here?" to someone from an universe in which underfell is the alpha canon. like, i can definitely see the path taken to create uf papyrus from ut papyrus, but that path might be less visible if looked at from the reverse side and on the reverse side, they might decide instead to go a different path to under(antonym of fell), their equivalent of the undertale universe.

underrise. the underfell-alpha universe would have that as their "the monsters are all good au"/reverse-engineered-undertale, with their take on papyrus in an undertale-type world.

Yeah, that's what I meant to get at.
UT, Papyrus tries to present himself in certain ways, failing in some ways we can easily see through. He's pretty sheltered, espousing the power of "hard work" without bothering to know a lot of the details of what makes anything work, crabby at his brother... But if we went from UF Papyrus to UT Papyrus, it'd be like Draco in... snuggly pajamas, rather than leather pants because desexualized.

Wiseasses might call it Underfail for the way all the characters are less competent at murder.
