Oddly enough Daine/Numair is one of the only big age gap ships I like. I love the Provosts Guard trilogy, but it really needed a book between the second and third book to cover some of the things that happened there and build up to some of the stuff in the last book. As it is, a lot of stuff in the third book feels like its coming out of nowhere
(Okay so was I the only one who was super "??????" about the entire circumstances of the acquisition of her original magic sword and how it's never referenced again or given an explanation?)
oh no, I was always expecting that to be elaborated on and then IT NEVER WAS Also, brief browsing of tumblr made me remember shipping Alanna and Alex.
They hinted at some really interesting stuff there and never came back to it :( The Alanna books are probably my least favorite for that
I think it's a world-building element she dropped awkwardly? But yeah. Re: Beka: Spoiler: Beka spoilers I loved many aspects of that series, but the romance was THE MOST rushed-and-silly of Tortall's various rushed-and-silly romantic subplots, and [twist] was terrible. Terrible!!
Yeah, there were several things like that about Weird Magic Stuff that got brought up and then just... dropped. Could be a leftover from an earlier draft and the tone of the setting changed since she initially wrote it, but still pretty ???
I was always super disappointed with the Weird Magic Stuff that got dropped. Everyone remember The Black City and the Y name people (???) right? What the fuck was up with them.
May I (selfishly) request that talk about the Beka books are put under spoiler cuts? I haven't actually gotten around to reading the last book yet (read the first two years ago but they went really slow to me for some reason, probably bc i was unused to the genre, and I ended up not reading the third) ....i should probably get back on that huh
A friend of mine had an interesting view of Twist that made it somewhat better for me Spoiler: Major Spoiler She said that Tunstall reads to her as having depression or some other mental illness. So even though people keep telling him "you are good enough for her" his brain keeps telling him "she'll never really love you unless you have the proper status in society" So basically his whole betrayal ends up being driven by dumb brain. :( And extra book that would've maybe built up to that a bit and introduced Farmer sooner would've been nice
I wouldn't even be bugged by Weird Magic Stuff going unexplained if Weirdness was present in more of the narrative. (Like how it's never a problem in the Abhorsen books that we never find out where exactly the Disreputable Dog's statue comes from or what it was doing in that room of the library, because there's so much unexplained stuff everywhere.) But it stands out, so it feels like it ought to be setting some sort of mystery up, and then it just... isn't.
exactly! I like unexplained Weird Magic/Weird Events/Weird People/Etc. But I like when it seems INTENTIONALLY unexplained.
psst i did and it was wonderful. a shame it never got a second season. XD Also, a quick question. Does anyone know how old George was supposed to be?
He was supposed to be older than Allana and John both, and I think he was in his early twenties when she was a page? So somewhere around 8 years older than her I think.
Possibly late teens. But he was definitely old enough to be considered an adult when Alanna started her page training
Which is weird to me, cause I always thought he was early teens? Man I need to reread. Truly terrible :P
