This is why seeing stuff tagged trans character actually makes me worried. Because its not going to be well written. It's going to be I can have my slash and vaginal sex at the same time because that's what trans guys are good for, am I rite
I'm currently ass deep in the tag and I've stumbled on some pretty good stuff, but a lot of it is... nnnnot great. I mean, all things considered, there was bound to be a good 60-80% that was fairly shit, given the general amount of fic of any genre or subject matter that's fairly shit, but this thing in particular really goddamn irks me. Once, just once I would like to see a trans character in an a/b/o where the 'trans' thing isn't the existence of the a/b/o dynamics at all.
i get my slash-but-with-vaginas fix from undertale skeletons, homestuck trolls and other varieties of xeno, mostly. cis dudes that have vaginas 'cause it's a species and/or magic thing (eg. endlessly customizable ectogenitals) and don't get dysphoria from them. and i like it both 'cause it's hot, and 'cause cis dudes with vaginas and without dysphoria make me feel better about having a vagina and degender the thing for me. it's like... sans, just chilling with a vagina and giving no fucks about whether boys are supposed to have them or not and that having no ramifications for his gender identity. it's weird, stress-free gender wish-fulfilment.
Wait, so most of the time when they say 'trans character' in a/b/o they mean 'this character is both male and omega', not 'this character was designated one dynamic but is mentally another'? Which would be transdynamic, not transgender, so the trans character tag probably shouldn't be used anyway...
Of course, that doesn't necessarily apply in some cases, like trans Mettaton, which is the best kind of Mettaton in human AUs.
It's either "this character is male and omega" or "this character pretended to be alpha but is actually an omega and embraces their omega-ness and has a million babies forever" both of which are.... not ideal.
My band name. But the thing is! I want sex that involves trans people! But not cringily! Do your research people I can't write all the trans!Mycroft myself
Wow, I think that's actually a very neat explanation of why exactly I don't like a/b/o even though I don't have an issue with most of the elements involved. I like it when characters aren't what people expect them to be, or refuse to conform to what they think they're supposed to be. So much of the a/b/o I've encountered just creates scenarios in which transgressiveness is a snowball in hell. Either it never exists in the first place because the setup is used to give characters a socially accepted way to have what would otherwise be an unusual relationship, or it puts in a token appearance for a dramatic premise then dissolves completely in three seconds as everyone quickly discovers how happy and satisfied they really are to fulfill their assigned roles in society. I'd rather read teen vampire romances. The characters tend to be painfully aware that they're behaving in a way most people would not approve of, but they're gonna fucking do it anyway because it's true to their actual desires. That's what I want.
AUGH D: Spoiler: nsfw I know that not everyone is as picky about the adjectives they use for junk as I am, and I know that some people specifically like words that make me shudder. But if this is an intensely sweet, intensely romantic new-relationship fic, and it's just getting started, drooling, pulsating [vagina] lips is probably not what I'm expecting it's all my fault. i should have known what i was getting into when the author described the story as 'short, sweet, and squirty'
Particularly annoying when a canon queer couple is shoved into an ABO setting as an A/O pairing. 'S like. How'd you like some toxic heteronormativity with that queer representation? Better yet, heteronormativity WITHOUT ANY WOMEN INVOLVED ANYWHERE? That's it, we did it, we fixed the universe! That said, I have seen a few with female characters who were more than pair-the-spare background lesbians, and every once in a while you hit on a verse where "they have both" is a thing. Fic that combine these are few and far between and should be hoarded like precious jewels. (... mutters guiltily about knowing way too much abt this crap...)
And I just sit there and wish for more f/f abo because that turns out to have been my shit. Gods bless you one Mercy/Ana abo fic. You were all my horny ass could have ever wanted.
I will x right the hell out of a DCU/Young Justice fic that mixes up Romani and Romanian. They are not the same thing! It is certainly possible for someone to be both Romani and from Romania, but that is not true prima facie. If you head-canon that Dick Grayson is both Romani and Romanian (which is great, you do you), you need to make that clear. Otherwise, it just looks like a mistake. Also, Romani and Romanian are not the same language. You don't need to get into the specifics of whether Dick is speaking Vlax Romani or Anglo-Romani or Lovari Romani &c, but please, please don't have him speak Romanian and call it Romani. I get that translating English into Romani is pretty difficult, as there aren't a lot of online resources, but I would much prefer to read "He said something in another language" or "'Go to hell,' he said in Romani" than " 'Te dracu,' he said. 'What language is that?' another character asked. 'It's Romani,' he replied" or whatever.
To clarify: I suppose a futanari could have trans friends, (in the world where... futanari have friends, I guess) but... you know what I mean.
I very nearly googled "male futanari" at work for the sake of a dumb joke. It's prolly just called reverse futa anyways
